We all know that the 6PPC with mid 60's bullet weight and N133 or very similar powder shot from a 21 or so inch barrel is the arguably
most accurate thing God ever pulled a trigger on, and once on its way, the bullet is on its own. Seems obvious that the pressure curve must be the determining factor. Barrel length is my main concern here. Bullet diameter, bore diameter, rifling configuration, bullet bearing surface all plays into the most accurate combination, as does the bullet profile itself, but barrel length....?
What is it about the pressure curve that makes a 21.75 or so length barrel the "go to" length, and how can one apply that knowledge to building a rifle in another caliber like .22 Hornet or 6.5/284 or whatever?
Thanks
Bryan

That magic 21.75 length is an old wives tale.

The biggest determining factor in barrel length is what will make weight on a particular rifle.

Yea that magic length is because thats exactly where it makes weight. Some newer tapers out there put em at 20 and others at 23 and theres no magic just a 10.5lb gun thats at the mercy of that hummer barrel you rolled the dice on

Also remember that the Houston warehouse 21.75" came from a 22 PPC short. Don't know if that barrel length would be the same for a 6 PPC.
