Hottenstein boat tails and neck clearance

I'm prepping up a batch of brass to be used with Lowell's BT bullet, and upon measuring them, I find that they're pretty darn fat. Almost .244". If I turn the necks for a .262" chamber at my normal .0081", the loaded round at the pressure ring is just a hair over .260" giving me less than .002" clearance (supposing the chambers on these barrels is actually .262). That's a bit less than I like. I'm thinking about cutting some brass at .0077" or .0075". Anyone else ever cut that thin for these bullets or the like? I'd rather have too much clearance than not enough.....I hate those errant fliers from pinched rounds.

Yep, you have ample room (heck, there was a time when guys ran a thou or less). The current trend seems to be towards more clearance, namely 0.002" or even 0.003". But regardless, you should be fine as long as you check your loaded necks.

You do measure your chamber neck, don't you? You won't know if you have too much or too little clearance unless you do.

I am making brass for five different barrels, two of which are not mine, and two of which were made with a reamer other than my own, and one that hasn't been chambered yet. I know what my reamers measure, the other barrels I won't know. That's why I'd prefer more clearance than less. Error on the side of caution if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Anyone else? I know lots of folks shoot these bullets......somebody somewhere has had to "go below the eight" on this.....

I had some of those bullets last year but mine were not near that fat. Maybe mine were made off a different die?? I ran .0025 clearance as I do with every bullet. I remember having to push those BT pretty hard to get them to shoot. Lee

Yeah, I think Lowell has two dies. A Simonson and a Duetch. I think these bullets are from the Simonson. I hope the barrels like 'em!

I have had a round with fat bullets at long range a .2437 at the pressure ring and.2432 at the shank. What worked for me was a free bore diameter change to .2438 with no change in free bore length. When you seat the bullets .0005 larger pressure ring you don't have enough spring back in the neck to hold the bullet except at the pressure ring and they pull easy and if the pressure ring goes through the sized part of the neck you can push them back in the case with your finger. They shoot very well, once you learn to dance with them……. jim

I would do some testing before I turned a large batch of cases. The main reason that I am trying a .263 neck chamber is this very situation. I believe what I am told by those who are top shooters about the desirability of clearance in the range between .002 and .003, and when I turn to get that with a large pressure ring bullet, neck tension suffers. So far the experiment is a success. I prefer .263.

Um.
Did ya talk to Lowell ?
My first Super Shoot. Ya couldn't get an word/answer edge wise?
That guy has a million friends. It was amazing to see. I was always surprised, he could get his rounds reloaded.
Sometimes they were 2-3 deep.
I heard a guy from out of state parked his RV at Cabela's and went to Lowell's house for a bullet making course.
Damn nice guy...........

By the way. I am sure he is at Kelbly's Range for the Super Shoot. He has never missed a Super Shoot.
He will be sitting out on the Patio. With the other Michigan Shooters. And a couple guys from S. Africa..............
