HMR Ammo Sorting

What methods can be used to increase the accuracy potential of factory HMR ammo?

I have not tried gauging rim thickness before to sort. Does it work well?

I have a gem scale which resolves to 1/100 of a grain, would weighing the loaded rounds make any sense? My senses believe "no", since weight differences could come from the powder, the brass, or the bullet.

I have thought about pulling bullets, sorting the brass, then refilling the powder amounts accurately. Though I have heard the crimp is very strong and don't know how that may effect the process.

I know some things may provide more trouble than they or worth. I have landed some very tight 0.2" groups at 100 with this bugger in a factory barrel, which has me thinking about methods to better ammo.

The biggest effect on the process is that your emergency room bill should be spectacular. Don't screw with loaded rimfire ammo.

ammo sorting

i just cant believe people persist in trying to reload 22 ammo.

So non of my questions are valid anymore because this was asked?

I read an article about 17HMR reloading, but it was mentioned the guy got a hold of primed brass. He managed something like 2700FPS with a 20gr bullet. I have also read that the pulling can be done if done cautiously. So maybe I am a little misguided by the internet in my hopes for better accuracy. But jeez, give me a break. ;)

If you can afford to shoot the very high end 22 ammo, which i cant afford to, rim fire thickness is not a issue, its the same, the lower you go in price it does make a difference. i use a bald eagle gage-the more expensive one-- and on my wolf match extra, my most common size is .039 and i would estimate that these are 70% of all i measure, but i do wind up with some as low as .037.5 and high as .040.5 and with my limited experience, will these high and lows be fliers, i think so.

Besides the safety issues, I believe that you would leave marks or deformities on the soft lead bullets. I would check out several different brands and lots of ammo to see what your gun likes best.

Just how much improvement do you expect to gain over .2" at 100 yards? What is your average group size?

The bullets are jacketed. The idea was to load new fresh bullets, but I don't really want to do that anymore with the expressed danger in mind. Instead I will try the rim gauging.

TangoTwo,

When the extreme spreads are low I get .2-.25" 5-shot groups. But then I have groups with large ES and they open up to .4-.5" groups. So the consistency is not great. I have tried different brands of ammo and find they all have similar ups and downs. Of course in the wind, all bets are off with this cartridge.

Best choice

Is to get every know brand of HMR made and test. Then use the one that shot the best. Other sorting a weighing methods are a waste of time. Remember, if you are shooting this in competition, others are having the same problem as you are. If you are using it for hunting, the dead rabbit won't know if your head shot was only .002 off POA.
