Well it's in. On a beautiful mild day Terry Brady, Terry's son Chris and Josh Duckworth shot 99, 98 and 98 respectively to finish first, second and third in the Thirtieth Annual Hickory Egg Shoot. Terry and Chris shot a 42 pound Bat DS with a 26" 8.5 twist Krieger in a Shehane tracker. Their load was a 6BR 0.262" neck , Berger 105 VLD with 30.5 grains of Varget. Jeff Godfrey won Factory Class with a 77 and, drum roll please, a Savage in 22-250 shooting 52 gr Sierras. 86 shooters took a crack at the egg at 500 and an astonishing 17 shooters hit it, including Chris Brady's girlfriend Jessica Edmundson. Interestingly, Jessica hit that egg with only the third cartridge that she had ever fired. She was counseled that she might have a future in shooting if she could shake the crowd she's running with and get some good coaching. Josh is pretty good with a bow as well as a rifle. Three years ago he picked a bow up for the first time and has won 17 of the 21 3-D tournaments that he entered since then.
I want to mention something that I can't remember paying off for anyone before. Almost everyone shoots the head at 100 and the belly at 300 and 500. The rifle Jim Mcguinnis shot hit low at 100 for Jim and knocked him out of contention straight away. His first shot at the belly at three hundred was centered. With nothing to lose he threw a couple of Hail Marys at the head and shot the highest score (33 points, 3 higher than a clean at the belly) at that distance by going for the much more difficult but higher scoring head. Quick thinking, unconventional strategy and a good result.
