Hickory Egg Shoot

Well it's in. On a beautiful mild day Terry Brady, Terry's son Chris and Josh Duckworth shot 99, 98 and 98 respectively to finish first, second and third in the Thirtieth Annual Hickory Egg Shoot. Terry and Chris shot a 42 pound Bat DS with a 26" 8.5 twist Krieger in a Shehane tracker. Their load was a 6BR 0.262" neck , Berger 105 VLD with 30.5 grains of Varget. Jeff Godfrey won Factory Class with a 77 and, drum roll please, a Savage in 22-250 shooting 52 gr Sierras. 86 shooters took a crack at the egg at 500 and an astonishing 17 shooters hit it, including Chris Brady's girlfriend Jessica Edmundson. Interestingly, Jessica hit that egg with only the third cartridge that she had ever fired. She was counseled that she might have a future in shooting if she could shake the crowd she's running with and get some good coaching. Josh is pretty good with a bow as well as a rifle. Three years ago he picked a bow up for the first time and has won 17 of the 21 3-D tournaments that he entered since then.

I want to mention something that I can't remember paying off for anyone before. Almost everyone shoots the head at 100 and the belly at 300 and 500. The rifle Jim Mcguinnis shot hit low at 100 for Jim and knocked him out of contention straight away. His first shot at the belly at three hundred was centered. With nothing to lose he threw a couple of Hail Marys at the head and shot the highest score (33 points, 3 higher than a clean at the belly) at that distance by going for the much more difficult but higher scoring head. Quick thinking, unconventional strategy and a good result.

Thanks for posting this, I didn't get a shot of the score board, it was nice to finally meet you and put a face to the name.

Hi Sam,

It was good to meet and get to visit wih you as well. Larry's match is a lot like a big family reunion, isn't it. Why don't you come and shoot at Piedmont this Saturday. We can get waxed by Terry and Chris again.

I made some egg holders today to use at my range, no experience here at all.
Does anyone have pictures of the ones used at Hickory?
I used stiff wire and bent a circle on top then a 12 in. leg. Drilled a 3 in. deep hole in a 4x6 to place the holders 12 in apart.
Any advice would help.
Do many of the holders get damaged from bullets during the match?
I saw a picture somewhere with a small orange safety cone with the egg sitting on top. That would be expensive to buy enough cones for a match and hitting the cone must knock the egg off?

Mike.........we run an egg shoot at our club for the kids on National Hunting and Fishing Day. What I did was to use eggs that had been out of the refigerator (no longer wet with sweat) Take string cut to the length you desire and use silicone glue to attach the strings. Of course, give them time to dry!

I won't bet on it

but I think Larry uses regular string and scotch tape.

Greg, I will slip in sometime, just don't know when.

Mike,

If the eggs are swinging from the wind while hanging inside a box you have a bigger challenge at 500 than just a little boogy in the hen fruit. The box serves to conceal the bullet's impact on the berm to limit intel for subsequent shooters.

Greg

By the way Sam, congrats on some very fine shooting.

Greg

yep

They swing in the breeze, Larry also paints the inside of the box black. It is a lot of fun doping the wind and timing your shot with the swing of the egg.

there is a photo about half way down, the head is the size of a nickle. It is scored worst edge, all the way in the head is 15, break the black and it is 9, you loose a point each ring there after, the belly is 10, and 7, etc. I Hope that makes sense.

Opps

If you take a copy paper box, paint the inside black, poke a hole through the top and attach the egg to the other end with the egg centered in the box you will be there. at least that is what they look like through the scope. Hope that helps.
