H 10 SB question

About a month ago one of my H 10's started throwing oil so I took it apart to clean out the oil passages. Solved the problem but this is where the plot thickens. A couple of days ago I was cleaning around my bench an found a ball bearing. I think it fell out of the thrust bearing assembly. I've chambered a half dozen barrels since then with no ill effect. Lathe seems to run just fine so I'm tempted to leave it alone. Is this a mistake or should I tear the damn thing apart an put the ball bearing back where it belongs?
 
Can't answer your issue, but if you really wanted to get to somebody, wait until they finish a major strip down & rebuild & then leave a ball bearing or spring or the like on the floor. :mad:
 
Solved my problem or at least partly! Took things apart and found my ball bearing had no relation to a SB lathe. What is it for? I have no idea.

American made heavy 10's are all I'm familiar with. I have two of them. One is an older single tumbler model and the other is a later double tumbler unit. The newer one was leaking or throwing oil off of the front ( by the chuck) bearing. I took out the spindle and with a pipe cleaner cleaned out a clogged up oil passage. That seemed to solve the problem.

Sorry. When I think of "slinging oil" I am visualizing a gearhead lathe.
