I went to phoenix a month or so ago, at the last minute I decided to rent a car. I know the lady at the rental place quite well, she smiled at me and said "you are going to like me today". the only car she had left was a Camaro SS with the 6.2 liter with the 10 speed tranny. with that combo it was claimed to be 455 hp. I went to Phoenix (actually Thatcher) and back averaging way over 70mph and hitting 100mph several times, average for the trip was 27mpg !!!!!

I drive an F-150 with 260hp on a good day........thinking I might have to get a truck like yours for the motor alone !!!!

I first learned this lesson in astrophysics driving a brandie new '86 Escort. This car got 34mpg easy. I put a hitch on it, hooked a 12ft UHaul on and headed out after work moving from NH to WA State, traveling with friends driving a Trans Am.

at SEVEN MILES PER GALLON me......!! Crossing states the size of counties and I'm worried about fuel....I barely made it over the Hogsback outta' Vermont and coasted into the next gas station just as it closed..... The next 15hrs were a nightmare of trying to find open gas stations. NO cell phones, trying to drive straight thru the nite and northern tier backwoods towns that rolled up the streets at 9PM

At 84 miles per TANK.....

Luckily the Industrial District in the middle had some later nite stations and we bought fuel cans, carried more fuel....

We limped into Minn'DeSoda and a UHaul store, put a hitch on the TA and traded out for a 20ft trailer which we loaded to the gills. I bought my buddy's gas from MN to WA and STILL came out ahead, but better than that, we didn't have to stop for gas. 250-300mi/tank instead of 60-80

TA didn't know the trailer was there.

I trailer now with Suburbans, gasoline powered only (I despise everything about diesels, have 5 diesel rigs, hate 'em. wish they still made gas-powered tractors....) and have found that big motors rule for towing. The one I use most just gets 11mpg, towing a 24-footer or getting groc, don't matter.

So we go get groceries with something else :)
 
No replacement for displacement. particularly when hauling whatever. Put the 6x10 trailer behind my Escape (2L turbo) drops from apx 29+ to 15 mpg ( empty trailer) load it up down to 12 or less depending on atmospheric conditions, 15 gal tank. Start looking for stations at the 1/2 full mark. 6.0 Diesel 3/4 ton does not change much with that little trailer. ( yep diesel is a bit of a pain but my V10 was only about 8 mpg in town and 11 hwy, course it was a 4.77 rear end, never pass a station with that rig.)
 
Braggin about my gas milage

I drive a 2017 Cadillac XT5 with a V6 and I don't pull a trailer with it but it will go like a spotted ape when I tell it to. I get a little over 20 mpg in town. On the road at highway speeds it will get in the high 20's. The other day, I drove over to Dan Killoughs place in Winters, Texas, a distance of about 60 miles. Since there was road work and the traffic was light, I drove at 55 miles per hour for a change. It got 41.6 miles per gallon for the trip. "They don't build them like they used to."

Howdy Al,

Ok, now that was funny!

Now, don't get mad at me, I recognize you were in a dire circumstance. But putting a trailer hitch on a Trans Am is WRONG! Even though you had to.

Had to have been an older TA or so I would think. I had an 82 with the 305 boat anchor. Not a lot of git up and go. But looked coooooool! Maybe it could have pulled a trailer............

The only thing wronger than putting a trailer hitch on a Trans Am is putting a trailer hitch on a Porsche 944 Turbo. Saw that here in Kentucky back in the '80's. Something in the back of my head says I have seen one on a Corvette around here, too. You can't let hillbillies have anything nice............

If ya' cain't afford a truck then how ya' gonna' pull the bassboat? Plus, only got's 2 parking spaces in the trailer park and one's for the old lady's car so's she can have a job to pay rental on the boat storage.....

I'm pretty sure you're right but there's circumstances involved that only hillbillies understand...or perhaps don't understand. Either way you end up with a trailer hitch on a Porsche.
 
Oh my gosh. This reminds me of an incident years ago in Charleston, SC on Spoletto weekend. This is arguably the busiest weekend in Charleston. Traffic was wall to wall on the main drag, one lane each way. Right in front of the Customs House we heard a mighty thud, loud screech, and then two more thuds. A car, a Mercedes, was pulling a boat and the trailer bearings locked up, tore the axle from the trailer and dropped the trailer, the boat, lower unit first, onto the pavement and side swiped two parked cars. A crowd gathered although they were all there to begin with. Out of the crowd came the loud voice of wisdom. “This is what happens when you don’t keep your shackles and bearings greased in this salt water, folks.” This is pretty much what the father and son didn’t need to hear at the moment. Traffic was all backed up, as you can image. In keeping with the theme, this was a fishing boat being pulled by a Mercedes.
