I have made .30 B.R. brass by necking up factory 7MM B.R. brass for a number of years. Now with the high price of brass I would like to form .30 B.R. from my supply of once fired .308 brass. However, I almost had a heart attack when I checked the price of forming dies. My question is could a .30 BR neck sizer with interchangeable larger neck pieces be used instead of the more expensive forming dies? thanks for any help.

In a word no

And as a person who made 6 BR cases from the 308 cases back in 1982 I am here to tell you be glad we have 6 BR Brass available, the cases I made with that set of case forming dies back then were horrible.

Bad Idea

Back in the mid '90's, we made what amounted to a 30 x 1.5 by doing what you want to do, the brass gets really thick as you cut it off.

I made my own dies out of stress proof, I just put in the press long, and would screw it down about a turn after each stroke untill the shoulder was moved back enough.

I used a 30x44 reamer, run in short, to make the chamber.

This was real labor intensive, and the fun ran out real quick.

Also, keep in mind that the nresulting case will have quite a bit less capacity than a 30BR made from a 6BR or 7BR Case.........jackie

Thanks, I'll just bite the bullet and pay the high price of 7mm BR brass.
