Flag Rotation For The NBRSA Score Nationals?

I talked to Mike at the Lake Charles Club and told him I would furnish enough flags to form a Flag Rotation at the Score Nationals in Lake Charles in June.

They have 20 benches, so I guess they will be using a 5 (or 10), bench rotation after each target. That means I will need a total of 35 flags, that would be 5 at 100, 7 at 200.

Does that sound about right? All of the Flags will be identical, single vane, daisy wheel, similar to the flags I use.

Her are my flags at Seymour. Notice no Daisy's, they are useless after the wind gets past 15 mph.

In IBS you need to shoot on 5 different benches at a Nationals so you would rotate 4 benches. Does NBRSA do it differently?
Just curious.

5 x 7 = 35 Flags ?

I just use the number of rotations/targets multiplied by ever how many flags set at each bench in your rotation. So, 5 targets x 7 flags would be 35. 7 flags is more than enough for me, even too many most of the time. My preference is 4 or 5 at 100 and 5 or 6 at 200. Of course this is up to the individual..some like more but most, fewer. Particularly at 100, the flags tend to get in the way of one another if you have too many..and too much information is sometimes worse than not enough. To each, their own in this regard, but it is somewhat range dependent and upon others having their own flags on lanes to either side of you.

At regular matches, I shoot 5 at 100 and 6 at 200. I think that is what I will set up for this Nationals. So I need 30.

At a National Event, it is understood that when you are assigned to a rotation, you do not stick any more flags out there. That way, you avoid all the clutter.

Of. Ourse, some shooters insist on being rude and do not follow that protocol.

It is pretty crowded at Lake Charles. More than one set in front of each bench, and it gets pretty bad.

That brings up a question..Is there a rule that states who gets to set flags in that situation? Is it whoever is on a given bench at match 1, or what? I've never seen this printed anywhere and don't recall it being discussed.

Thanks!

For those that are unsure what we are talking about, at a National Event, If you are assigned to a flag rotation, that means there will be flags already set up in front of the Benches on that rotation. You do not have to bring flags.

I have seen some very unhappy shooters when a shooter decides he wants his flags out there is well. Many of us know of one prominant, (now deceased), shooter who always insisted on sticking his flags in the way of the the flags on the rotation he was assigned too. He would just tell everybody where to stick it.

Many National Flag Rotations have shooters that request that rotation, and it's understood that you use the flags furnished. But if you are assigned to a rotation, I know of no rule that states that you cannot set more flags. Unless that rotation has a shooter about 6'8" inches, 290 lbs who tells you, "we would appreciate it a lot if you used the flags already set".

Just to be clear..are you saying that if a shooter that is on the 2nd, 3rd or whatever relay, if he sets his flags first, and there is no set flag rotation in place, that the guy on the first relay has no say in it..except of course to get his flags set earlier, if he want to shoot over his own flags. IOW, first come, first served, regardless of what relay a shooter is on? I'm just curious. If I understand what you're saying...a set flag rotation, or setting multiple sets of flags for the same bench are the only options and that no preference is given to who is on the first relay. Is that correct?

Mike, if one wants to shoot over his own flags, then he should apply to furnish enough for a complete rotation. At least, that is my understanding. i.e. those shooting on benches 1,5,15, and 20 would be using the same flags. Also, benches 2,6, 11,and 16 would be using another set. I may have it all wrong, but check with Mike Guillot to be sure. James Mock

Mike, please don't think I am being rude, but do you understand how a flag rotation works at a Nationals, where you rotate after every group, or target.?

What relay you are on has nothing to do with it. You will be on a flag rotation. You don't "set your own flags". Every bench will be covered by a particular flag rotation.

If, by chance for the VFS 100 yard, my flag rotation starts on Bench 1, then I will have the exact same flags set in front of bench 1, bench 5, bench 9, bench 13, and 17, if Mike uses the 4 benches to the right so each shooter shoots off 5 different benches for the yardage.

Jackie, et all,

Read this year's minutes. As of 1/1/16 there can only be 1 set of flags per lane. The rotation holder's flags are IT, no one else s. No more "don't give a damn who's rotation this is, I'm going to set my flags". Much nicer view w/ 1 set of flags.

And with 20 benches, the rotation would be 4 benches.

No problem. I do understand rotation. I've been to a few score nationals and can only recall one sponsored flag rotation and I was the sponsor. That said, my question is in regard to matches that are NOT entirely covered by sponsored rotations..or where some lanes are left up to the shooters to use their own flags. In such case, who has choice, assuming two or more shooters would like to set their flags...anyone? In all honesty, I would think that the first relays shooter would have choice. Otherwise it would be left up to who gets there first...without any rule contrary to that. That's my question. Thanks

Several questions for us newer registered shooters

1. What are the dates?
2. What weight classes are there?
3. What weights are shooting on what days (good to know if I only have one classification rifle) as well as at what yardages?
4. Can I assume that this will only be "SCORE" shooting and no group since it is the "Score Nationals in Lake Charles in June."?
5. When / where do we sign up if we want to participate?
6. Are the costs to shoot charged per shooter? or per class/weight limit? and what are they?
7. What if we only have 1 set of flags? do we bring them? or hope we get placed into the rotation where they are provided for us?
8. I know there are spots to bring a camper, but no electricity. Do we need to reserve/pay for one of those spots?
9. Do we have to shoot in any other registered matches prior to coming to this shoot (any qualifying)?

Dates, June 7 through June 10.
The classes are Hunter Benchrest and Varmint for Score. Varmint for Score is fired with any Rifle that is legal to be fired in NBRSA Heavy Varmint Class. Hunter is fired with any Rifle that meets the requirements of a legal NBRSA HBR Rifle.
I assume Hunter will be shot on Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th of June. Varmint for Score will be shot on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th.
You will not have to bring flags. You will be on a flag rotation, the flags being finished by a individule or several individules with like flags.
The only qualification you need to shoot this Match is to be a member in good standing of the NBRSA.

The other questions will be answered on the NBRSA web page as soon as the info is available.

So what is a left handed shooter (like myself) supposed to do if the only available bench is not on a LH rotation?

Dick

At the 2015 Groups Nationals, Mike Conry had the Left Hand Shooters Flag Rotation.

At a Group Nationals, I'm sure there are always enough left handlers to make up the bulk of a rotation. At a smaller event, I am not so sure, especially when held on a range with just 20 benches.

Left hand flags are generally set on a different line that right hand shooters. But I'm just speculating.
I'm sure David knows. He is a Director.

There will be a left hand rotation or youll have to start your own. The signup committee will have listed whos sponsoring a rotation and youll fall in on flags you like. Do not put any extra flags out, no dancing pig updraft indicators, and please no oddball colors. Nothing worse than being stuck on a bench with orange flags when every single other flag on the field is green. And get out there with your sponsor and help set flags. It dont matter if youve never even seen a windflag your sponsor is fixing to set up 35 flags and he needs help. And he needs help picking them up!! Dont be that lazy bastard we all hate after the match. Most importantly if youre that windflag expert (we all know one) bring your own rotation! Ive seen way too many hurt feelings at the flag setting ceremonies.
