Firing Pin Spring

Was cleaning and checking out the benchrest rifles today. As I broke down the bolt to clean out the inside of the bolt and firing pin assembly it occurred to me that I had not ever changed the firing pin springs. Two of the three are '97 model Pandas, the third is a '92 version Teddy. How often, or how many rounds is recommended to change these?

I have several Pandas and every year at the Super Shoot I have Tom or Carl change out the springs in a couple of them. They also, in the process of changing the springs, make an extra effort to wash out the bolt body and inspect the firing pin for defects. Then next SS they do a couple more.

Costs about $20 per bolt, well worth it. On mine a 4 year old spring when it is removed is about 1/2" shorter, relaxed, than the one they are installing. I've never had a misfire doing this.

They use very good quality springs not some of the cheap aftermarket stuff.

I am not pusning Tony's book, however if you access to one, look on pages 54 n 55 where he recommends an easy way to check the spring tension. I send to Kelby's and have them send me a couple of springs, your gunsmith can put them for you if you don't want to send the firing pin and shrouds to Kelby's.
