Exploding gun part 4

Last year we found a reduced load (which is actually max in this gun) for the "exploding gun" of 31.3 RL15 / 105 berger vld/ cci 450. Shoots good and all is right with the world.

I let a buddy use it to hunt with. Now my load is way jammed, and trying to unload a loaded round WILL result in an action full of powder. So, the nice guy that I am, I seated the bullets .050 deeper.

KABOOM.

Those shorter loads are blowing primers. The long ones don't.

Can't wait for the new gun!!!!

does anybody know what's being said hewre???

Tod, you need to elaborate........... only YOU live inside your head! :)")

Its a 6Dasher if I remember correctly?

As you back your bullets off the lands your cases have less volume so you get higher chamber pressures. If you keep going deeper into the case with the bullet the pressure will go back down again.
Fully jammed and fully jumped give you low pressure while anything right around just touching gives you the highest pressure.
If you ever load for pistols keep that in mind.

Lynn,

I understand that. But...... .030 into the lands ends up being .020 after the bullet self seats on the lands. I am actually only .020 off of the lands. This is hardly enough to take loads that are fully safe at 100 F and compleatly destroy brass at 20 F, especialy in a dasher at 31.3 gr RL 15.

Al,

I don't have time to elaborate. There must be 75 to 100 posts in the exploding gun series vol 1, 2, and 3 threads. I guess I was venting more than anything else.....And the guys who are more familiar with the "saga" know how frustrated I was.

With the VLD's it is very common to shoot them 0.125 - 0.185 off of the lands and into the lands 0.100 or more.
0.020 off of the lands to just touching will produce the highest pressures. That said it sounds like you have a carbon build up problem if 31.5 grains of RE15 is giving you trouble. This of course assumes your freebore to be 0.100 or more and that the powder your using is actually RE15 and not something else in a RE15 bottle? A few years back Alliant put RE19 into RE22 jugs and sold it as lot# 25083.I know this because my 30-06 was running 190 Sierras at 3000 fps and it was also posted on there website.
Take 4 cases and trim the necks 0.020 shorter than they are right now and load them with your normal powder charge and fire them twice in your gun.Now shoot your regular load over a chronograph and tell me what velocity you are now getting.I would also swap out your primers in case you got a bad batch.Last year we had 22 misfires out of 5000 primers.

Sorry, I didn't know.
