Curious about 6mm BR Rifles.

To alinwa and others.

Thanks for the information and the pictures. I find the evolution of rifle cartridges a fascinating subject. Some day I think that someone will come up with a round that will out do the 6PPC. I think its weakness may be the rather low S.D. of 6mm bullets of around 70g. On the subject of the 6x47 Lapua, the round is not much smaller than a 243W. Maybe the Europeans are discovering something that is already out there.

The 6X47L round is actually a huge improvement over the .243Win. It's something that we've been begging for for ten years. If you were to search this forum back to around 2000-2001 you'd see references to the "6-250" the "6XC" and bunches of blown out 6BR's like the "DAsher", the "6BS", the "6BRX" ad nauseum.......... and before that (the archives have been destroyed) you'd see all sorts of posts on the subject of a truly BETTER 6MM round.

Lapua answered many of our prayers with the 6.5X47L case.

The 6X47L is truly a better round, HUGE!!! :)

I pre-ordered cases several yrs ago and got 500 of the first 6.5X47 cases to cross the pond.......... they're awesome. They do stuff a .243 or 22-250 case can only dream of.

The 6x47L certainly sounds like a very capable round so just a few more questions. Does it have a 30/06 head size, what size primer, what weight of projectile do you find best in your particular rifle? Many thanks for your time and trouble. Murphy.:)

6mmBR info source

Go here for all things 6mmBR: http://www.6mmbr.com/6mmbr.html

I originally bought one for my wife built by Speedy Gonzalas. The thing shoots like a laser and recoil is like a 223 Rem. Then bought a Savage LRPV RBLP and has a 1:8 twist Krieger barrel put on and the action cleaned up a bit and built as a switch barrel bun. Again, it shoots like a laser.

Just now am buying a 3rd 6mmBR, this time a full blown BR rifle with a 8 twist barrel for F-Class out to 1000 yards.

All I can say about the 6mmBR is buy it and you will smile. But understand that you need to be a reloader to be able to afford to shoot it.

BTW, the Remington 6mmBR cases are NOT the ones you want as they have a large flash hole and this is not as conducive to accuracy as the Lapua cases with a Small flash hole.

Thanks for the feedback, every one seems so passionate about their 6 BRS, they must be a joy to own.:D

Murphy,

-Yes
-Small primer/small flashhole
-There is no "best" projectile IMO, perhaps I don't understand the question. I primarily use 105-115's for competition and some 55-70's for varminting.

There is a lot of misinformation or partial information in this thread.

Regarding your immediate questions:

In custom bench rest rifles, is this caliber competitive with 6ppc?---NO

al

I would take exception to that specific NO

I had a 6BR with a 1:14 twist that would hold its own against any of my other 6PPCs, With the correct load/bullet it would print many aggs in low 2's (and I'm not saying it could do that all day long:eek:). Please dont group all 6BR's into a mediocre crew.....it can and will suprise you;)
As a matter of fact, Jim Borden is in the process of sending a 6BR chambered barrel to me now. I ordered it specifically because of the performance the last one he sent:cool:

I agree with Al, lots of miss-info here.

For what it is worth, here is the history.

Remigton originolly brought out the 6BR, (and 7mmBR), the case length was in the neighborhood of 1.520 inches. Norma started making brass for it, and standardized the case by increasing the overall length to what we have now, 1.560.

Then Lapua got into the picture. They kept the 1.560 length, and stamped the head, "6mMBR Norma...Lapua". But, Lapua also did something else. They added darned near .002 inch to the web diameter.

What this meant was, the new Lapua Brass would not chamber in many minimum spec chambers cut for the originol Rem and Norma Brass. Gunsmiths soon learned this, and most reamers are now ground to fit the diameter of the Lapua Brass. The fact is, the Lapua is so good, it is rather futile to use the other.

A 6BR will not compete with a 6PPC in the kind of Competition that Benchrest.com represents, that being 100-200 yard. But, for longer ranges, such as for 600 yard work, the 6BR with a 1-8 twist is just about as good as it gets.

It surprises many shooters that we push 65-68 grn match bullets faster with a 6PPC than most shooters do with a 6BR. Last week end, we were shooting over my Ohler 35p, and I dug out some of the new Barts 65 grn Boatails. I used the same load that I push a 68 grn Bruno Boat Tail at about 3440 fps, and the darned thing went 3550, with no ill affects.

Weird, huh. That load didn't shoot worth squat. I didn't have time to mess with it, but the popped shots showed that it is way too hot. Next time out, I will drop the velocity down into the low 3400's and tune from there.

I have a 6BR barrel for my Rail Gun at 23 inches that I shoot in the mid 3400 range with 68 grn bullets. N135 is my powder of choice.

If I were building a Rifle for Sunday afternoon lying sessions with my friends, or for live Varmint work, I would build a 6BR. The ONLY time I would choose a 6PPC over the 6BR would be for all out Benchrest Competition........jackie
