6br
I agree with Al, lots of miss-info here.
For what it is worth, here is the history.
Remigton originolly brought out the 6BR, (and 7mmBR), the case length was in the neighborhood of 1.520 inches. Norma started making brass for it, and standardized the case by increasing the overall length to what we have now, 1.560.
Then Lapua got into the picture. They kept the 1.560 length, and stamped the head, "6mMBR Norma...Lapua". But, Lapua also did something else. They added darned near .002 inch to the web diameter.
What this meant was, the new Lapua Brass would not chamber in many minimum spec chambers cut for the originol Rem and Norma Brass. Gunsmiths soon learned this, and most reamers are now ground to fit the diameter of the Lapua Brass. The fact is, the Lapua is so good, it is rather futile to use the other.
A 6BR will not compete with a 6PPC in the kind of Competition that Benchrest.com represents, that being 100-200 yard. But, for longer ranges, such as for 600 yard work, the 6BR with a 1-8 twist is just about as good as it gets.
It surprises many shooters that we push 65-68 grn match bullets faster with a 6PPC than most shooters do with a 6BR. Last week end, we were shooting over my Ohler 35p, and I dug out some of the new Barts 65 grn Boatails. I used the same load that I push a 68 grn Bruno Boat Tail at about 3440 fps, and the darned thing went 3550, with no ill affects.
Weird, huh. That load didn't shoot worth squat. I didn't have time to mess with it, but the popped shots showed that it is way too hot. Next time out, I will drop the velocity down into the low 3400's and tune from there.
I have a 6BR barrel for my Rail Gun at 23 inches that I shoot in the mid 3400 range with 68 grn bullets. N135 is my powder of choice.
If I were building a Rifle for Sunday afternoon lying sessions with my friends, or for live Varmint work, I would build a 6BR. The ONLY time I would choose a 6PPC over the 6BR would be for all out Benchrest Competition........jackie
