coplete newbie, shot a bench gun yesterday, nowi need one

hello to you all, let me beging by saying that I appreciate any advice in advance, andlook forward to developing in this sport

yesterday evening at the range an older gentleman allowed me to shoot some groups through his light varmint class bench rifle, and i shot my best group ever, it measured .187" CTC when we measured it, it was on an official 100 yard target and he signd it and witnessed it for me.

I am so excited about this now that I hav to get one. Heres what I know about his gun and am wondering if it would be feasable to find something like this in the used market for a price of around 2K or not?

he had a hall model 672 reveicer I beleive it was, it was a Hart barrel with a 14" twist, and a hall bench rest fiberglass stock, the caliber was a 6mmPPC.

I have a scope already its a burris balck diamond, fine crosshare in 32X with a side focus

understand that I want a good solid gun but cant afford to get a 6 thousand dollar gn at the moment, so i want to be fair to my situation any advice?

im in the process of selling some of my duplicates in hunting calibers to try to free up some funds,

im more excited about competig than being competatie at this point if that makes sense,

i couldnt belive how tiny that group was and how easy it was, even reading the wind flags was pretty simple at 100

i imagine it gets much more difficut in extended ranges

I guess its too late now, but didn't yo momma tell you to stay away from poolhalls, beer, shady people and benchrest guns? Poor soul you are now headed down a slippery slope that will lead to much heart ache, costly equipment, hair pulling, cussin and an occasional fit, and a lot of fun. Welcome aboard...........Donald
 
small groups and benchrest rifles

A used benchrest rifle is the best way to go starting in benchrest if of course having a new one built is not an option money wise. A good used benchrest rifle can be had for under $2000. My advice is do not buy used benchrest rifle based on anything else than a bona fide custom action and stock that feels comfortable to you. Basically it isnt all that important what caliber it is or what brand or state the barrel is in as you have to regard the barrel as something you have to replace soon although for your learning process it could be enough for you for some 1000 rounds or so. The action has to have PPC bolt face or be eazyly converted to PPC as your new barrel would be chambered in that cal. What brand of action to buy is a matter of personal taste as I belive that basically there isnt any difference accuracy vice between any of the better known custom actions. If you are in touch with the guy that lent you the rifle it would be a good thing to ask him advice as he will know what this is all about.

One word of warning, do not expect that all your next groops will all be of this size, that is not going to happen. The other day I took my doughter of 23 years to the range I was shooting 100yards hunting targets for fun and saw that the condition was realy not mooving the impact. Shot some all 10s and mostly X. My doughter shot her first groop ever from a rifle period and it was .207 four with in .100. What I am saying is when you start shooting benchrest you can and will shoot small groops but you will not shoot small aggregates. My doughter didnt have the slightest knowledge of reading the condition, this just was the condition.

But the fact is that after one shoots groops with an accurate benchrest rifle, anything else is a waste of time. (For 100-200 yards groop shooting)

I can't completely agree with this! :)

These guns are NOT just for 100-200yd group shooting, they are the most wickedest VARMINT guns on the planet too. Think about this, 55gr bullets at SUPREME accuracy going 3800fps......... compare THAT to your 22-250..... (which has always been held up as a superior varmint round)

thanks to all, I have gotten several ofers via Pm as well im currently looking to sell a few of my duplicate hunting guns to try to free up some case and lord willing, and the creek dont rise, hopefully I can come up with something good here.
