considering setting up matches in CT

Gary,
I am realizing that the details needed to run a match can be numerous, but if that is what is needed then that is what I'll do. I definitely appreciate your "forewarning" if you will (placed in quotes because I know that your intention was not to frighten but to educate). I would hate to get into this and then get crushed by some important detail that turns people off from coming back.
At the bottom of all the effort in creating these matches is my desire to get people who shoot to come together and have a good time.

I would like to take you up on your offer to contact those who run matches on a regular basis. Fortunately my club is quite active in highpower matches so as far as etiquette, and mentality of competition they are well versed. What we don't have are people with this type of match experience.

Thanks again, and please keep those posts coming, guys. It really means a lot!

BTT,

Getting close on the proposal date. Just wanted to give this thing the best chance possible for getting board approval.
Thanks for all the support from those who have already posted.

Keep them coming. I really want the approval process to go as smoothly as possible.

As it looks right now we have 8 benches, 6 of which are pretty solid. I am proposing 4 additional benches and two in reserve for club members who want to shoot on match day. If I get more responses I might be able to bump the bench number up, so let me know. My dream would be to eventually be able to rationalize installing concrete benches, but we would have to have a good year or two of solid attendance before that came to the fore.

The range is otherwise equipped for a non-grand agg competition (no stationary backers), and so the outlay from the club should not be too great.
For those of you who might be traveling a great distance, and might need to stay the night, I am looking into camping areas nearby and Lake Compounce amusement park which is literally down the road from the range.

Thanks again,
Mike Suhie

Stationary Backers

It will be easy enough to deal with the stationary backer issue once you have your State Championship. Otherwise, you don't need any. ;) Many clubs use a very simple setup for them.

God Luck,

Pete

Getting close to the 26th deadline, and I just wanted one more shot at the top of the list.
My proposal is nearly complete, and I have had a member who runs a number of matches take a preliminary look at it. He says it should pass, and if I can get at least ten shooters I should be good to go. I feel pretty confident that with the support I have so far plus those who hear about the match second hand that I will have plenty to get the match running.
The tough part will be finding volunteers to help with the targets and other details, and getting the schedule and type of match figured out.

I am considering a 100yd VFS, factory/semi custom, but I am unsure if I should have an HBR/VH class. What do you think? My first thought is to keep the first match as simple as possible, but I don't want to turn anyone away either. From what I have understood the total time per relay is 3hrs (6 targets per shooter and 30minutes per target).
I talked to Ron Hoehn about some plaques, and I am hoping to hear back from Mrs. Borden about the scoring reticle. So many details!
I am pretty excited about the whole thing, though.

Thanks again, guys.

I'm still in. Looking forward to it. I might even bring a factory or semi custom class gun along for ha ha's. I haven't been shooting full blown customs long enough to forget about the factory rigs that brought me to this point.
As long as theres enough shooters I can shoot in two relays correct?
I talked to a friend of mine. He wants to bring a factory rifle too. Add one more to the list.

Maybe even one more shooter in the wings. I'll do some checkin.
Thank You for your efforts on behalf of the shooters in this area. Much appreciated.-Joe

Joe,
Thanks so much for the support as it will go a long way with the board. I feel I can easily fill our ten benches, and hopefully make it a regular thing and get the board to OK a few more. Now I just need to secure a target/pit crew, and get Pete Wass down here to show me the rest of the ins and outs.
The one thing I can say is that we WILL have a good time at these matches.
My whole intention is to get people like your friend with factory guns (which was me until last summer) to get out there and feel like they are just as welcome as I would want to be. It may help those folks to know that this will be my first match, and that I will be learning right along with them.

However, as far as learning goes I hope to keep that in the wind reading/tuning/gun handling arena. I want this to be as well put together as I can so as not to turn off those with more experience from coming back.

Once the board gives their yay/nay I will have to coordinate the schedule with IBS so as not to interfere with other matches in the area (that area being 3-5hrs away I am not sure there will be much interference).
