If my second rifle comes and the bolt does not match. What should one do send it and have it trueed ? Why I ask when I went and picked mine up I checked a few rifles and they did not match and the action did not feel right when bolted closed. What if it does not match and feels ok should I see how it shoots? Smiths elaborate cause I feel there will be a lot of these.

It doesn't matter which style receiver you have if the bolt is of the other style the bolt will hit the wood in the bolt slot unless it has been modified.

Shoot First

I would not worry about numbers matching till you shoot and see if it is a shooter or not. Then you can lap the lugs and check head space check crown if it does'nt but lots of these shoot very well dont worry just shoot it.

Also you could go to a Yahoo group on matching bolts. You could list the serial number and maybe someone will answer and match up with the correct serial number. We did that the last time these rifles were available and several were sucessful in matching up bolts.:) I'll try and find a link to the old group and you might hook up.

Three bolts

I have a Win 52D, that has three bolts. Only one might be the orginal. The HS varies only .002 from tightest to the loosest. I don't think its a big deal, unless it don't shoot. HS can varry from .039 up to .048 and still shoot in most cases. If you are worried about it, have a gunsmith set the barrel back to your speccs. Only problem there, is you still have an old barrel that may or may not shoot to your liking.

I agree with Fred. It should work anywhere from .039 to .048 providing the firing pin has enough projection at the maximum headspace to allow it to hit the rim and fire the cartridge. If you get into setting the barrel back and recutting extractor slots, may as well go with a new barrel, the effort is about the same.

If the bolt closes easily, meaning it's not butting against the breechface, and the rifle fires ok just lap the locking lugs as Richard said, and see how it shoots. It may do great! You never know about any of 'em 'til you put it on paper.

I agree. I am not to worried about it because my first one matches and is a shooter. I got the second to redo completely or sale if I dont like it
