For those who are interested, I received a flyer from MSC last week and noticed that they had the F-series 1/4" shank carbide boring bar kit's on sale for $129. They go on sale enough that that's when I buy them. It's a solid carbide 1/4" bar with 10 triangle tin coated inserts. This is the bar that I use for boring out most of my chambers before I go in with the finish reamer to finish the chamber. If you don't buy them on sale, they are prohibitively expensive. Part number is EV85213031. You can enter that number in the part number slot at the top of the page at www.mscdirect.com. The sale is good for April and is effective until 4/30/10.

Funny you mentioned hibernation, we went out for dinner this evening and everybody was out and about just like a bunch of bears that were sleeping all winter.

I saw that & was planning to order it & the smaller one on the same add.
They (MSC) couldnt tell me what the min. bore was on the 3/16" bar & would call me on Monday to let me know so I'm waiting unless you can tell me now?
 
Tooling

Mike and all:

Have you looked at the Kayser Tool Company/Thin Bit Tooling.

They also run sales if you buy the bits in volume (usually 8-10) the tool holders are often free.

I bought some carbide boring bars down to 1/8 of an inch.

They have a web site but unless you know alot about tooling their catalogue is easier to use.

still new to the chambering biz.
has anyone established a list of case angles ?

as in where do a set my rest for preboring a 6ppc, a 6beggs(220 russian) a 30br a 308 and 223 ??

what kind of cut can you take with a 1/8 boring bar ?

I think the 3/16" is .222" min. bore
 
To my understanding a carbide bar is 4 times as stiff as a HSS bar of the same diameter. I misuse the fool out of this Circle Industries bar often having it hanging out far enough to bore out a magnum length chamber. I normally take cuts of about .025" or less, but no more. Surface finish is very good running at speeds of around 1200 rpm. I don't taper bore, but straight bore for until I get the chamber .010 under what the reamer measures at the shoulder.
 
While we are on the subject of boring bars: Whats the best replacable insert/carbide tool for counterboring a Remington style breach?
I have a ground HSS tool for set back jobs when I cant use a counterbore reamer and wouldnt mind doing it without the reamer all the time if I could buy a good tool without having to grind one.
