Can the bolt on a Rem 700 be opened up?

Current Rem 700 bolt is for 308 case head . Can it be opened up to magnum size? Thinking about re barreling my current 6x284 to 257 Weatherby . Action length is for 308 . Is that too short?

The bolt face can be opened, but you may need a long action unless you don't mind single round loading and to eject a loaded round you'll have to pull the bolt all the way out.

It is too short to seat the bullets out where they need to be. It would be better to buy a Dave Kiff bolt instead of opening up yours.

dave's bolt ofetn work out more cost effective as well, as you normally have the a sako type extar fitted

I'll do a search

Interesting thanks guys. However I think I just might buy a 257 Mag instead because of limits of proper seating depth in current action.

The 308 700 action is really too short for even the 6mm Rem or the 257 Roberts... no good at all for the standard magnums...

Buy a new or used 700 standard magnum and use the original 700 extractor for the strongest and safest rifle build. Any 700 7mm Mag is perfect for length and bolt face and the 257 Weatherby is an excellent light Magnum. I would make it with a 26 inch barrel.

Remington Chambers a 257

Lately I've been hearing how its a crap shoot buy a factory rifle off the shelf. Buying a used magnum length Rem 700 and re-barreling it would be costly. But I wonder if buying a new Rem 700 chambered in 257 and then having it accurized would be cheaper? How is their new Mark X trigger? How about the Weatherby Mark Vs are they shooters? I've heard the Vangaurds are but they have 24" bbls I don't like the looks of their stocks.

Lately I've been hearing how its a crap shoot buy a factory rifle off the shelf. That is true with any rifle...

Buying a used magnum length Rem 700 and re-barreling it would be costly. It is the custom barrel correctly installed on a trued 700 that makes it worthwhile...

Ideally a great rifle would be seating bullets in one caliber depth, be just short enough to cycle through magazine, and bullet to either just touch or be slightly into or out of riflings.

This is not possible with any factory Remington 700 you buy.

My recommendation would be find a used Remington 700 action, (stainless would be my choice), has it tuned and custom barreled, and never look back.

What about that MOA Vanguard

Weatherby Vanguard has that MOA Guarantee? Does that mean they have a better quality control then Remington?

I don;t think I have ever had a factory gun that I couldn't get MOA out of some may take a little tweaking, but I could get MOA. I don;t have alot of experience with the weatherbys, but don't most weatherby factory chamberings have alot of freebore? That could cause a problem trying to seat bullets to the lands.
