Calling the gun plumbers. . .

Hey Guys -

I was contacted by a group that wants to put the Gunsmithing talent in the spotlight ... or through the grinder - .. either way, there is some interest to put together a high end show for builders that is complete with a judged portion to name a Gun of the Year/Gunsmith of the Year based on a few different categories. They are kinda lookin right in my back yard for a venue. There's a new casino hotel in Deadwood called "The Lodge" that is pretty much a Black Hills Bellagio. It's pretty classy.

If it floats your boat take a peek at the survey. They need to see results before they throw time and money at it. If it really floats your boat pass it on to anyone whom you think might also be interested.

Personally, I think its a novel idea would certainly try to participate. The young lady behind this has some really great ideas that could really breath some fresh air into this little past time of ours.

All the best,

Chad

C'mon share whatcha think gents!

im not a gunsmith but

i just had a custom rifle built. it took me 2 years to get the parts together and save for assembly. also i used what i thought as reputable individuals to get my project together and only two met or exceeded my expectations and that was an engraver and an exhibition wood supplier. as for the rest i spent a small fortune for dissapointment and buyers regrets. i am still trying to get this project to a respectable point.
from my point of view there are not that many custom gun plumbers out there and the ones that are truly good are way to busy to spend time trying to drum up work at a trade show.
of course that is my opinion and we all know what that represents.
by the way from the pictures you posted you do excellent work and pay attention to detail.

My impression is that this messageboard is frequented by those mostly involved in accuracy and practical gunsmithing, a group that is most likely not as much interested in art work and the aethetics of gunsmithing which would be found at tradeshows and exhibits, although some of this messageboards participants are capable of aethetics, such as yourself....................Don

What are the different categories? Both a high-end custom Mauser and state-of-the-art rail gun are examples of exemplary gunsmithing, but they are complete opposites in terms of appearance and function.

I think this might be a difficult contest for a crowd that cares most about accuracy. The example that comes into mind is from Dave Scott's "Secrets of the Houston Warehouse" article where he describes the most accurate rifle to shoot in the warehouse as having an unfinished fiberglass stock. It must have not looked very good, but apparently it generally shot groups around .05" to .035." I'm sure any of us would love to have that rifle for the sake of how well it shoots, but would it win a gunsmithing contest like this one?

Our first sponsor

David Kiff and I talked about this today. He's stated he will donate the reamer/gauging to any smith who participates in this.

One down!

I thought the................

ACGG had a (non televised) show each year where those things were done. That may be the drag, as some of those guys may not want, or have the time to do another one each year.:)

It sounds like another ACGG show? Or do you have another type of venue in mind? What's the plan? Custom wood or flashy paint jobs?

I'm not in charge of this so I can only offer and educated guess.

I think the direction suggested (for now) is to lump into three categories.

Tactical
Sporting
Competitive

An accuracy/functionality assessment would more than likely be a criteria also

From there its the creativity/capacity of the builder.

I guess we'll see how it pans out. Interest is building. A number of folks can expect to be contacted here in the not too distant future.

Cheers,

C
