Caldwell rock rest question

I am looking at a Caldwell Rock Deluxe and wanted to know if anyone has had experience with this particular rest.

I was going to use it strictly for squirrel hunting off of a turret bench. I have a Hart rest but it weighs 15 ponds and was wondering if the lighter rest was worth using.

I inherited one in a trade for a BR rest. IMO it is a very cheezy rest- not unlike all the other caldwell stuff- but will most likely do what you're wanting to do. esp if you are not using a flat BR forend. it should be okay for that. I have a bald eagle that is a jam up rest I use for hunting guns and it's not any heavier than that rock. maybe trade your old one for an aluminum version?

rests

i use a one piece rest sold by cabellas for prarie dogs throw a bag of shot on the rest some where towards the front for weight and shoot away think i paid around 90 bucks for it 5 years ago.

I looked over a Caldwell at one of my local gun dealers. As noted above, it seemed kind of cheezy and not the one I would want. The windage cross slide didn't work at all -- it would only slide a fraction of an inch before seizing up. I'd go for something better.

I have a Caldwell Rock and with front bag it weighs roughly 15lbs , not sure what kind of weight is suppose to be needed but this one stays put once set in place. Evidently you are considering a lighter version of the Rock since you mention your Hart weighing the same?

BUT , as the others mentioned , it is not an elite rest by any means. And for the $119 I paid I did not it exepct it to be. The other rest I was considering was the Sinclair which was about $328 at the time.

My main complaint with my Rock is the top , the controls lack any kind of precision. Will upgrade that when I can. There is a reason it is $200+ less than the Sinclair.

I have the rock BR rest and it weighs in at 16lbs

The windage top doesnt work very well

It is not in the same class as a Hart or Sinclair but it is half the price

Knowing what I do know and how much I enjoy the sport I would have probably purchased the sinclair rest.

If your using the rest for live varmints you might want to look at the caldwell Fire Control

I bought a Rock BR rest because that's what I was seeing ath the range and it looked like a decent rest for $160. The windage top is second rate and it's too tall IMHO. I was new to bench shooting and didn't realize what a difference a rest would make.

I sold mine when my Cowan rest was shipped. I upgraded my rear bag and now I'm a happy camper.

I've got both of the Caldwell models. The lighter one does fine for shooting smaller rifles off the bench without having a ton of weight. The only thing I've done to it is add a better front rest and remake the forend stop to be adjustable. I took the BR model and resurfaced the areas that the windage top slides on lubed it well and changed out the spring and got it to work much better. I also turned the surface that the center post ball bearing rests on and now have it where it tracks without so much oscillation when moving. I can't believe they expected a ball bearing to run on a krinkle painted surface. It works for now but if you have the money spend it on another. Quality costs.
