Budget home made tuner

In my initial testing I was shooting 4 x 5 shot groups at each setting ???

Thankyou for your time

Harro,
I think you are using up too much ammo. Shoot a three shot group, let's face it , if you get a flyer, the group ain't goin' to get smaller, pass on that setting.
Shoot three shot groups 'till you get the best groups.
Joe's method of 1/4" increments will work, record the best of these, and then fine tune in smaller increments.
When you have decided on the best setting, confirm (or otherwise) with several five shot groups. You may need to do this on several of the better settings.
Obviously you need really good conditions to fine tune.

gambler this tuner stuff reminds me of when we were kids putting a crab apple on a pointed stick. launch it right and it travels a long way, release to far overhand and the apple goes straight into the ground. like I said flyers are good droppers are bad.:D. Harro three shot groups are good and that's good advice when to tune.

ode to da node

Ode to da node

A rifle has a muzzle and da muzzle had a node
Vibration in the barrel as da bullet does explode
Shakin an a rumbling down da barrel as she goes
Headed where ya aimed it past da parallel node

Stick a tuner on da muzzle an tinker and twist
Mid barrel tuner, blooper tube.. an sprain yor wrist
Ifn I was an artist I’d make look jest like this
@@@@@@@()()()000000000000000000

Calfee made a tuner an it looked real nice
But he weren’t happy till he got it named his device
Now he pulled the trigger, an down the barrel she rode
Spinnin and a twistin to the parallel node

I see da muzzle, da barrel and da crown
One thang confuzin , jest makes me frown
Tuners what ya need, I been told
But what the hell is a gol dang NODE ???

:D

gambler, very well said. thank you. were you a rapper in another life?

ooooddddde to da nnnoooode, boyeeeee!

Allright gambler! As much as I hate rap, (and I really hate rap!) that pretty much comes to life as a rap. And I like it. Bench rest rapper:D. It is a concept.

awwwwYEAHHHHH Gambler in da house!

I had a really crude "device" made this past winter... basically 1 1/4" piece of steel bored 1" deep to fit the barrel with a slot cut so I can clamp it tight, and the rest of the interior bored 3/4". It's threaded so a large nut can be put on and simply adjusted by moving the nut to and fro. It's got about 3" of adjustment space.

I haven't really tried it yet... I'll get around to it sometime.

I have learned quite a bit from reading you old farts' readings since having it made... If I did it today there would be some changes but I think it'll work. Hopefully my rifle will be accurate enough to make a difference!

DSCN0874.jpgharro, this tuner is from shade tree. it's been modified, it was meant for a threaded barrel, the threads were removed and a taper was machined. it was drilled and tapped with 3 sets screws and put on a .800 savage btv barrel. the weights were also resized. the entire package weighs in at 6.5 oz. it improved that rifles acuuracy where as accurate at 30yds it is now that acurate to 50yds. it took the .500 grouping rifle and improved it by 30%. what was found out was lighter and the closer to the muzzle the weights were the more improved the accuracy was. just the fact of placing any weight on the end of a barrel improves vertical. too much weight and extending those weights too far may make accuracy somewhat worse. that rifle was bedded and only had minimal improvement but once that tuner was installed the improved accuracy was apparent on the first target.

kako 20? i am an old fart.

DSCN0829.jpg harro this is from the 40x the lighter line underneath is 3 speeds 1044, 1056 and 1077. the heavier line is 1054 team and 1071 black box. again prior to the groups opening up and falling below the bull is where the sweet spot in the tuner is. you must add too much weight to know where to come back from. by only tweaking it in small incriments you'll never know when the barrel is angled downwards.
