Borescope Camera

Gentlemen

I came across an interesting find at the WESTEC show in Los Angeles this week. The WESTEC show, for those who don’t know, is the west coat machine tool show. I found a company that makes a reasonably priced camera that fits on a Hawkeye bore scope and plugs into the USB port on you computer. This give you the same view you see looking through the eyepiece. If you see something you want to save just lick the mouse and it will save a copy on your computer. You have to buy three pieces for a total of $300 and it includes software. It is made to snap on the eyepiece of the Hawkeye.

The company is Bodelin Technologies www.proscopehr.com.

The 300$ sounds reasonable but I refuse to lick my mouse.

They also have a software product for sale, screen calipers, for $29.95. This tool might go well with Ontarget. You can download a demo for free. Looks pretty slick. :D

Well, Lou, if it's any good, there is a use for it. I have purchased several used varmint rifles this winter; all have chromoly barrels. All were advertised to have bright bores with sharp rifling. They all looked pretty good just looking down the bore into a bright light. However, when examined with the borescope, another story unfolded. Out of 6 rifles, only 2 had no significant pitting, and those 2 had some crown damage.:( Actually, one of the cleanest looking rifles had the worst pitted bore. Makes me wonder if there are many people out there who know how to properly care for chromoly barrels. Anyway, it would be helpful to be able to send some evidence of the bore damage to the sellers. I don't think any of them were being untruthful in their representation of the rifles. None of them had borescopes, so they couldn't really see the condition of the bores. Had a couple that gave me a partial refund to help with new barrels.

Joe I had the same type of thing happen to me. I bought a new Remington and never new the barrel had a group of pits 1/2 way down until 3 years later when I bought my bore scope.

Yea, ditto on a M70 308 deer rifle I bought years ago. At least my deer rifle shoots well. Not gonna put very many rounds through that one, so the pitting hasn't proved to be a big deal, just a disapppointment.

I couldn't agree more, Lou. A borescope is about the only reliable way to develop a good cleaning regimen without overdoing it. And, you can do a lot more damage to your barels by over cleaning than over shooting them. The borescope is also useful for examining crowns & chambers.
I failed to make my point about the borescope camera in the earlier post. If I could record what the bore condition was in some of those used rifles, my complaints about them would have more credibility.

Or you just buy the camera adapter from Hawkeye and with the appropriate mount on the camera you can take pictures with a digital camera. I've just taken stills with mine but since the camera does mpeg's there is noting stopping you from taking video. I knw it cost me less than the $300.

Thank you
