Has anyone tried the subject bullet at mid-range (600 yards at my club)? I am just completing a new .308 in 10" twist and 24" barrel length for our club F Class shoots. I have the Bergers on order and thought I would see if any of you already had some experience with them.
Thanks,
Richard

Don't use them myself, watched a couple of guys I know at a local match try the heavier bullets in .308 (inclding the 210s) for a year or two. There was no evidence of any advnatage noted in their scoring so I stuck with the 155 gr bullets. YMMV.

I shot 210s for two years.

To make velocity I used VV550. It worked great in cold weather but exhibited presure signs as the temperature rose.

I have not tried Re-17.

And a friend even tried Varget with unexpectedly good results.

My shooting group of FTR shooters think the 185 Berger and Sierra 190 offered better compromise of BC and velocity in the 308.

Thanks for the inputs. I have a full range of bullet weights to try. I will let you know how the 210's go.

barrel twist

Sir

Old post but I am looking for info on rebarreling my Rem 700 .308 rifle. A 1-10 I have been told was for the 200gr bullets. The 1-12 was for the 168gr's. I thought a 1-11 would allow me to use either the 155's or 168's even the 175's. Many of the barrels I see from companies are the 1-10. Can this be used well & get good results with lighter than 200gr bullets? Anyone please? ER Shaw barrel or PAc Nor is what I am looking at as well...

I have 1-11" barrel and 155-208 range of bullets do very well, people have reported good results with 210s out of factory 1-12" twist in 308

Bob,

1-13" happily stabilises all 155s, all 168s, the 175gn SMK and Berger BT Long-Range and just manages the 185gn Berger BT Long-Range and Sierra 190gn MK, although that last pair likely won't apply in US winter temperatures. 1-12" is ideal for these two bullets in most conditions and will handle the 200gn Sierra MK. 1-11" copes with the 208/210gn VLDs in most conditions - that's the twist used by many British and British Commonwealth Match Rifle shooters (beyond 1,000yd with .308W).

1-10" is on the face of it over the top for all 'ordinary' bullet designs including VLDs for lengths below that of the 220/240gn models, although a good barrel that has been properly chambered and fitted will perform brilliantly with almost any bullet weight from 155gn upwards out to 1,000yd. My 1-10" Broughton loves the 185gn Berger BT Long-Range at a shade under 2,800 fps MV. On the other hand, my previous barrel, a 1-13.5" Bartlein with a relatively long-throated chamber optimised for the 155gn Lapua Scenar would provide sub 0.5-MOA (in some cases 0.25-MOA) accuracy with bullets it was allegedly 'too slow' to handle - all 168s, the 175gn, 180 and 190gn SMK, various Bedrger VLDs. It was marginal for the 185gn Berger BT long-Range, grouping well at 100 yd in temperatures in the high fifties, struggling to hold 1.5-MOA at 900yd a few weeks into the winter with temperatures down 10 degrees.

I just started down the heavier bullet path this spring, and so far it's been great. I've run a 31" 1-12" broughton 5C, and a 30" 1-12" Krieger, both w/ PTG Rule 150 .341 neck. N150, CCI BR2 and lapua brass have 185 BT's cooking along at about 2750 fps, based on 900m drops. Elevation is nice and tight. I'm also going to experimnet w/ a 1-11" barrel throated for 185's and 210's, just to see, but th e210 will have to really shine to beat out the 185. One of the nice things about the 185 is t fits nicely into the 150 throat, and the 155.5 BT shoots great for the shorts, in spite of the long jump to the lands. We'll have to see how it does w/ and even longer jump ... If it doesn't do as well, I might end up w/ the golf bag approach- a shorter throated .308, or even a. 223 for 300-600m, and a .308 set uip specfiically for the heavies fot 800-900m.
