Benchrest For Me?

I subscribed to Precision Shooting for 15 years before taking the plunge, and going to a benchrest school. I learned so much I was truly humbled. I now own two rifles and several stainless steel "tomato stakes"! Benchrest is the only sport I know where a newbie can compete with the best of the best. It is like playing golf with a foursome including Tiger Woods, Phil Mikelson, The shark, and you! The only downside to benchrest I have found is that my hunting rifles are all no longer accurate enough, and need custom triggers and barrels! I have yet to meet anyone in the sport who was not helpful and pleasant to visit with. Two years ago, I shared a bench with Joe Krupa, and he won the Shamrock. I managed to be in the top 100! Did I have a ball? of course! give it a try.

Phil,

I have to appologize if I am repeating something that someone else has said....but I just got back from the NBRSA Nationals (short range) and the thread is so long I just don't want to read it all right now.

Are benchrest shooter arorgant (sp)....well...maybe in the sense that we know we shoot the most accurate rifles that there is. Other than that...you won't find the nicest bunch of people in the world and they will fall all other each other to try and help someone out or get them started. BR can seem intimidating and very simple but neither is correct. As mentioned by others...you compete against the best from the get go. I don't get asked and I don't have to say I'm in such and such class...I get to shoot with the best. In short range BR...all are considered equal (in every way) whether you are in the Hall of Fame or at your first match.

The reality of BR is that you shoot against yourself and at the end of the day...you see where you fall against others. That's it...even if you finish last...no one will make fun of you...exactly the opposite will happen...people will come and be supportive and try and help you out...it's very humbling and I believe it makes you a better person because of how people treat you. That's the greatest secret of the sport...well...not really a secret to those who shoot.

I was the one who posted the arrogant remark however it was not intended to brush all benchrest shooters with that word,I had posted that I received great pleasure from a stock gun shooting .500 out of the box and the response I got was "you won't learn much with that". Where does the equipment vs man separate, at some point it becomes the machine.

Look I've been shooting nearly 60 years love it all, shotgun, pistol, rifle if it has a trigger I enjoy however what I was trying to relay was that all of us need to be concerned when speaking of their chosen sport to not overly state it's importance, again I've seen this in other sports certainly not limited to shooting. We need people coming in not turned away.

Hopefully all will understand my meaning here. I''m going to reload a few.;)
