Anybody shooting heavey bullets in a fast twist Swift?

Hi:

For my next project, I am thinking about making up a Swift to shoot heavy bullets. Perhaps an 8" or 9" twist will be attempted.

I have a large amount of Swift materials left over from my long affiliation with the standard Swift. I am thinking of using a Remington BDL LA for the basis of this rifle.

I am very familiar with of the capabilities of the standard Swift and I am just looking for another toy.

Anybody out there ever use the Swift with a fast twist? What are your thoughts about this idea?

Tia,

fast twist .224"

Howdy !

I shot my wildcat .22-35 Rem w/ a 28" SS K & P 5-groove 1-8. Case capacity was between .22-250 and .220Swift ( closer to the latter ).

I shot 75 "A"-Max exclusively, using the rifle to cover both paper shoots and live varmint ( groundhog ) shooting.

Most accurate load was: 40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Match under the 75's for 3,420fps.
Primer switch to FED LR Magnum Match boosted vel to 3,500fps honest; but groups opened slightly.

My math indicated I could put 450ft lb on a groundhog @ 966yd, which means the combo would have been viable for a groundhog kill @ 1,000 ( given... a clean hit ).

As a dual-role' cartridge/rifle, the 75 "A"-Max in the 1-8 .22-35 worked superbly; for me.

IMHO -
Lighter .224" cal bullets wold not have been practical @ 1,000, and heavier .224s ( 80-90gr ) would not have transmitted KE to live varmint as well as the 75 "A"-Max; at extended distances.

Hope that helps.

I have a 1:8 twist pacnor 28" chambered in a 22-250 AI. It is pretty darn close to a Swift capacity wise. I shoot 75-80s mainly with excellent results. However the 69 SMK fly pretty good at 3600 fps. Lots of potential. However, in my mind a Swift must shoot a 52 grain bullet. The was my introduction to it.

Luck in your choice, tim

I also have a 1-8" twist .22-250AI am using 70gr Barnes TSX and 75gr Hornaday A-Max. Easier to load for than the .224TTH, and still able to shoot factory 22-250 for woodchucks.

When I started to work up a load for my 8 twist 22 250 AI ,I ran across the statement that 220 Swift load data could be used as a guide, so they are pretty close.I use 82 gr. Bergers at 3200fps with 39.0 gr of H4831sc.Barrel length about 28 ".

We experimented at work with 22-250AI in a pressure barrel using 77gr SMK. We were able to hit 4000fps with them, but in a 1-7" the bullets were coming apart, switched to a 1-9" and they stayed together. Pressures were way up there measured at case mouth with a Kistler 6215 gage.

Holy smoke - like how up there? I was getting lose primer pockets taking the 80 SMK to 3500 fps in winny brass. Never have been back to it now that Lapua 22-250 is available. Plan for the future.

These were shot in a standard pressure test barrel in a universal receiver, fired remotely. This receiver/barrel combo will take 100,000psi. The gages will take 85,000psi. We severly flattened primers in new fireformed brass. Due to safety considerations, I can not give out load data.

I bought a 220 swift from Bob white at the Shooters corner, The gun really shoots 52 grain bullets. I never really wanted to shoot the heavys. I have really only tried one load with the 75s and for a factory barrel it shoots pretty good. I am suprised at the difference in velocity between the reported loads here and my results. I was getting 2900 fps using a 27" barrel and 38G of AA3100 shooting the 75G Vmax.

220 ai

Zeke,
i have had for many years a Rem 700 custom rifle with Lilja 28' 1 in 9 barrel
It sports a hunter class style thumbhole stock, jewel trigger and 42x lightforce scope weighs about 12.5 pounds
it now shots the 75 bergers at 3650 fps, with 2213sc. wish i had more time to shoot it
Prevoiusly had a 1 in 10 barrel and shot 70 gn VLD's that was when they where the heaviest 22's around
Will order another 1 in 9 when this wears out, has done about 400 rnds so far
Cheers

Ive got a 220 AI with a 1 in 9 twist barrel shooting 75 gr A Max bullets. Love it for a long range P D gun.
