Aluminum Actions

I was looking for my first precision action, and after doing some searching, the Stiller Python looks like a good action for the price.

Are there any things which I should know about aluminum actions? Are they as worthy as a solid SS action for precision shooting?

It will be tough

for you to wear out an aluminum action in your time. Stillers actions are as good as they get from my experience.

Both Stiller and Stolle (Kelbly)

Aluminum actions are some of the most popular actions in Benchrest. Being involved in competition as a matter of course, they go through thousands of rounds more than any hunting rifle action will ever see. Even so; they will last given minimum care, a life time or maybe more. Both Stiller and Stolle actions are some of the best in the business and are very used to the winners circle.

Does the steel insert ware out quicker than the inside of the barrel? Jerrel

The insert is hardened and will out last many many barrels as will the bolt and action body.

Truthfully, I wasn't actually concerned about anything wearing out. I was more or less wondering if a steel insert inside of aluminum is something that could cause variances due to expansion differences in the metals. But it sounds like they are well known and widely used, so that seemed to cover the questioning.

The only major killer for me, is that today I was told the wait could be a year on a Python. :(

I have two of Jerrys Viper actions. One is one year old the other I bought about 3 years ago used. There is no telling how many rounds have been thru the older action. There is not one sign of wearing thru the anodizing and it just keeps getting smoother and smoother. And it has had a few very high pressure loads thru it. I just wish the new one was as slick as the old one but it will wear in soon I'm sure.

Conserns

Since their creation way back when by Ralph Stolle, the Aluminum body actions with the steel insert manufactured by the Keblys have certainly withstood the test of time. Thousands of champoinships have been won with this style of action.

While the Viper and the Kelbly Panda are not identicle, they both share the same same basic engineering principle. That being, an aluminum body with a large foot print, featuring a steel insert that takes the pressure of ignition.

This design is proven, where it counts..........jackie
