Air museum pictures aren't too far off topic?

I was at the air museum on base at NAS Pensacola today. This is definitely one of the best air museums anywhere. I'm not including a picture, there is a SBD dive bomber there that took part in the Battle of Midway, the last such plane in existence. It was the dive bombers that took out the Japanese carriers as all of their Zeros were suckered low to take on the torpedo planes.

That's a real early P40. The early Allison gear reduction set up was longer than the later version. This is also a way to tell an early P38 from a later one.

Pictures of airplanes, especially WWII era airplanes, are NEVER off topic!

In the attached photo, your looking at the most beautiful P-51 I have ever layed eyes on...the magnificent "Su Su". The gentleman on the left is WWII triple ace Bud Anderson. The ugly, stupid looking guy on the right is your truly. Maybe not a greater thrill in life than meeting and talking to that man.

Second pic is of Su Su, without me cluttering up the picture.

Third picture is of The Wife sitting in Whistling Death. Wish it was a better picture.

As an aside, for my 40th, The Wife sent me up in a P-51. Got some cool video. If I ever figger it out, I'll post it.

I'm definitely a P51 fan, one of the most beautiful aircraft ever. Getting to go up in one had to be the ultimate.

Whistling Death? Isn't that what the Japanese called the Corsair?

BTW: Camera, I use a Sony Alpha dslr. This particular lens is a Minolta (Sony bought Minolta) 24-75 f2.8.

The ride in the P-51 was about as much fun a guy can have with his clothes on! It was helped by the fact that the pilot, Dan Martin, is quite accomplished, and is a regular competitor at the Reno Air Races...he can fly a little bit.

What's funny is how that Rolls Royce Merlin makes such a sweet sound when they go by...but when your in the cockpit, it sounds like the end of days. Loud is an understatement.

Below are a couple of clips taken from the cockpit, with Dan flying. Not my clips, but we did the same thing.

Whistling Death is in fact the Corsair. You don't realize how big one is until you stand next to it...or try and climb in one!

I've long wondered why they didn't put a tricycle landing gear on the Mustang, as they did in the P39. It would have been even more awsome.
Happy to see I'm not the only one into aircraft. Right behind me is a library, (if you will) of everything we had, have, and "theirs" as well. Including the latest stuff. Notice the two 23's and the 37mm under the Mig 15?
The Corsairs used to drop empty shell casings on our positions as they were straffing the "gooks" in korea.
Days gone by....

It's all about packaging. Where are you going to stow the nose gear and not screw up the aerodynamics and the airflow into the cooling duct ?
