A use for WSM actions.

Quite a few cheap WSMs are starting to appear on the second hand market but it has occured to me that they are fairly useless for converting to other calibers because of the short action and giant bolt face. Has anyone thought about a 45/70 conversion? Seems to me that it might be a practical use for an otherwise useless action. My local gunshop chops up anything odd or unpopular with an angle grinder so there might be a few going cheap.

What if a guy was to build a .25 wssm rifle on a wsm action.... Wouldn't the "extra" room in the box allow you to seat long bullets really long to touch the lands and leave room in the cases for "More Powder"?

Just a thought... A long time ago I built a 6.5mm Remington Mag on a full length Long action for the same reasons. It worked great.

Yes absolutely by the thousands, Anything thats a bit slow selling gets the chop. I once spotted quite a nice but neglected Winchester model 70 with a long action. Went in about a fortnight later as I was going to make an offer but they had already given it the angle grinder.

That's absolutely ridiculous. Sounds like a gun shop owned by anti-gunners. They'd be better off to put them on auction arms or gunbroker and get something out of them.

WSM's

I will buy them if you will sell. Some one cutting these guns up make you want to go HUM.)chill( The velocities I get from these cases are very consistent; they are easy to work up a load for (remember fast is fine but accuracy is finer). I own both 7mm Rem Mag and 7mm WSM and both are very good rifles the WSM is easier to carry around. :)

 Something doesn't make sense here. If I didn't know better I would think this was an April 1st joke being pulled on April 21. And yea....by the thousands. (?)

I don't know any auto dealers who scrap their slow selling vehicles, or any merchants that throw out their poor selling TV's and appliances. I might as well be reading about shopkeepeers who throw the cash out of the register when business is no good.

I feel like I'm participating in a parellel world that got's too many negative ions and is making no sense. I'm outa here, and going back to Earth as I know it. ;)

You are living in a parallel world, you see I live in Australia. There is a "Genuine Reason" clause in our gun laws and a lot of people surrender their fire arms if they, the owner get too old or in some other way loose their genuine reason, the gunshops can't cope with the influx and chop them up. Don't laugh our laws may soon be coming to a gun shop near you, but we are digressing. All I wanted to know is if it is possible to make a 45/70 out of a WSM action?:D

This is BS, chopping good receivers just because they are not selling quickly.

The only reason that I can see for a non-government person or company to chop up an action is if it has been damaged in a fire or extreme overloaded situation that damaged the bolt and/or receiver.

I swear that besides an April fools joke, I first immediately wondered if you were in some far off gun-strange place like Australia, and looked up in the right corner of your post for a hint of your residency. But, I thought to myself "Naaaa......even in Australia, that makes no sense."

Sorry mate about your crazy gun laws there, in what I otherwise summise that I'd find a swell place to live.

Anybody wonder what our wonderful government has been doing with their firearms that are no longer in use? I know our local gunshops don't scrap slow selling guns, but our government has been cutting up outdated guns, stocks and everything else that they don't use any longer. When I worked for DOE, we transitioned from Mcmillan M40A1 stocks to A-5's. All the guys on the team where chomping at the bit to get ahold of one of the 30 or so perfectly good stocks, but no, they all got the chop up treatment. We were heartbroke and dumbfounded at the same time. Dont even get me started on what they did to the MP-5's.

I seen on tv tonite the Tea Party says Obama is going to outlaw fishing in the USA. I'm going to sell my cane polls while they are still worth something. There will be a fishing pole crash just like the stock market in a few months, mark my words. Jack C

I think our mate Murphy is being a bit melodramatic here, the market for used guns, and guns in general here is very strong.

Nothing melodramatic here, Try Shoesmiths in Twoomba and Alan Mills in Kingaroy. Both told me they chop up old firearms in big numbers, so sorry if the truth hurts a bit but I guarantee that they are not the only gunshops culling firearms.

This may have changed a bit with the advent of" Used guns.com" lets hope so.:)

This is true. One shop mentioned is one that I frequent & they have lots of bits & barrels from these cut jobs. The numbered bit, the action is the bit cut in two because it is classed as the firearm, the rest is parts. Mainly it's ty old shottys that go, but some other stuff, good stuff, but showing wear, gets the cut. Both shops are in the major town surrounded by large rural areas & most farmers are old boys who no longer shoot, or die, & Ma hands in the guns or sells for a pittance.
People hear a shot fired these days & want to know the who, why & where, dont just let it be. The indoctrination runs deep,
Be Aware, very Aware, y'all may be next.
Powder, don't get me started. Explosive goods insurance to carry it is so demanding & high rate that us Qld. rural area's have one carrier. Sometimes for one shops order there is a 600 k round trip out of the way to do one delivery. How long will that last ?
