A couple threading questions

I understand Jerry

Pete, I'm not sure you and I are talking about the same thing. Think of the thread relief notch as a U and a thread profile as a V. The thread relief should have V sides regardless the grooves bottom shape or width.

As to whether these setbacks are worth it or not depends on the current barrel condition, is it slightly eroded or badly eroded, and, it also depends on the intended future use of the barrel being set back.

The last practice tenon looks exactly as you describe. I read here some time ago that a certain great shooter/machinist sets his chamber back every 400 or so. I think it to be a good practice as long as one has the ability to do so.

Properly done thread reliefs probably don't hurt anything but they just don't look professional. Practice picking up on an existing thread.

Picking up a thread is actually pretty simple. It will take a little time your first go around, but dont sweat it!! Lee

No more difficult than threading up to a shoulder. Relief cuts may have their place in special circumstances, but it's just too easy to do the job without them.

Ron

I cut a small releif in my tenons. I do it simply because i feel like it acts as a storage space "LOL" in case i get some dirt or other unwanted object in my threads. at least in my mind, i feel a little safer with it there. I have done it both ways with no trouble. Lee
