8208 Pulldown

As I hinted in my post above, AAC 122910 is NOT pulldown. It is virgin mfg. 1979 military surplus powder. It is slightly slower than V133 when metered by weight.

I did not shoot any at the Super Shoot but I did some tuning with it there and it does work very well in the 6PPC.

But stay tuned for an announcement in early 2012 by Hodgdon that will be very very interesting.

BTW, I just received some test samples from Alliant of two new powders, Varmint and AR-COMP. A slight amount of loading data is on the Alliant site.

The latest offering, sold as IMR 8208 from High Tec Ammo, is very clean powder , almost new looking. I sifted a jug and found
nothing but powder, none of the pc's of asphalt bullet sealant or dust. It is at home with 28-29.5, but doesn't ressemble anything
I'm familiar with from Dupont.

According to a few well known shooters this powder from High Tec is not IMR powder. If it shoots good in your rifle even better. But selling something that is not IMR is helping them get more money for it.

versions of 8208...

Jerry, Dan at HiTech says it's a pulldown from loaded de mil rounds... But yes, if it is pulldown, it is very new looking and clean.

Yes it DO..! Has a wide tune that seems stable a through a wide temp and humidity range... Does have specific nodes FOR sure... Dirty but my barrels handle 20-30 rounds and Agg doin it.

Cale, the powder I am talking about is not from HI Teck. It is powder that was purchased from a US ordinance by Magnum Materials Reloading Supplies, a surplus ammo-shooting supply dealer based in Nashville Tennessee, and is being distributed by Brunos and Magnum Materials.

So I was told it was made in 1979 for a loading of the 223 for the Nicaraguans. I have seen some of the original 40# loading machine containers and they are dated 1979 and contain the lot # AAC 122910.

Jerry,
I think the confusion on the # AAC 122910 lot of powder is that Hi-Tech is also one of the sellers of this lot of powder and have it advertised as a pull down powder. Maybe because that is what buyers are used to . I dunno .

i do not know how magnum material is...they have no site that i can find.
i'm pretty sure lester bought his powder from pats reloading...or hi tech..one of those two..
i told people who in the past, but did nto keep the data as i had no money to buy with.

When i talked with the boys at Hi tech ammo 2 weeks ago they told me they has 40,000 more rounds to pull down, and when that was done thats it. From the conversation i had with them, it was pretty clear that they were pulling this powder. Again i am talking about the new millitary or pull down or whatever you want to call it 8208, and yes it comes in 8lb jugs that say IMR 8208. This powder is an out standing powder, and it will be talked about for years to come. For me being some what new to the 6ppc, this new offering of 8208 has made my tuning problems go away. I have shot this powder now probably around 9 different range sessions, and every time i go out with this powder i leave smiling. Thats all i know! Lee

Good info, thanks Jerry... Confusing info in regards to "8208" these days..............

Thanks Jerry . Jerrys usually right on powders too. He was the first with a heads up on the 8208XBR powder too.

Here's what I can report......

With all that has been said to this point, here's what I can accurately report.

I purchased a case of what is labeled as IMR 8208 (Lot # AA122910 ) from Hi Tech Ammo. When I ordered it I was told, by I believe Dan, that it was a pulldown powder (1983 issue) and that Bruno bought his supply from this company (supposdely the same stuff I received). I paid $98 per 8lb + $25.81 Shipping for the Case but was NOT charged a HazMat Fee. Bruno gets $135 per 8lb + Shipping + a $25.00 HazMat fee.

I shot it for the first time yesterday (81° & 52% RH) and it does show good promise. One thing that is so obvious is it is a VERY DIRTY. I don't mean debris in the powder or un-burnt grains, but filthy barrel residue. When I shoot V-133 my 3rd wet patch comes out clean. I could used a dozen wet patches with this stuff and they still come out dirty.

Skeet, how do you find it to clean up?????

Well, I guess that's the trade off it it shoots as good as has been mentioned in this thread. We'll see..............

I appreciate all the input from this post.

yes it is a bit dirty but i didnt think clean up was all that bad. It took a couple more patches than normal but the brass brush seems to brake it up just fine. I then follow up with a couple wet patches and thats about it. All in all, i think its a winner for sure. Anything to get away from "verticalVuori" Lee

The U.S. goverment has changed the way the lot numbers are done, before that (around 1980) it was impossible to determine anything but who loaded the ammo by the lot number. AAC was loaded by Accurate Arms Co., other than that, it's all speculation. I'm awaiting to hear back from Army Ammunition Activity as to any background on this lot.

Hovis

Hovis,

Any update on your efforts to find out about the background of this new lot of powder?

Thanks,
Ryan

Good post! Last week i had my first attempt at loading 6ppc, all my other reloading experiences i never had a full case before, and was concerned about pressure. Its really a wonderful experience with loading 6ppc for me. I have learned a lot form this post. Thanks for sharing the useful information.
