6ppc feed in a rem 700SA

I am thinking about biting on a rem 700 short action repeater action with a 6ppc bolt face. if i buy this action i will use the action in a varmint rifle chambered in 6ppc. i figure perfect way to use all the retired or semi retired 6ppc brass i have. My question is this. Will a 6ppc feed from a bling magazine BDL type? What follower will i need to use? I dont know for sure, but i am assuming the action was once a 223 opened up to ppc, so wont the feed rails be small? I am not all that familure with remington 700 actions. Lee

Let me ask this to. If i wanted to buy a second bolt for this action in 308 could i even use the magazine for say a 22-250AI? Can the feed ramps be opened up?

Ignoring the magazine question -- since you have the machine tools, lathe & mill -- what you might want to consider is putting a Savage bolt head on your Remington bolt.

Instructions available off the internet. It's about half a days work, if you want to sleeve the bolt for best fit in the action raceway. Less if you just want to put on the Savage bolt head.

I have done this, albeit for a long action, and have a magnum boltface, a .308 boltface, and a PPC boltface. If I wanted to add a .222, it would be no problem. IIRC, each boltface, when all was said & done (with ejectors & extractors), was about $60.00. The PPC was aftermarket (Sharpshooters Supply) & cost more...

Can't help you with the magazine question though.

1. Apparently bolt heads are now available from PT&G

2. The conversion of the Remington bolt is discussed at

You'd probably want to get a second Remington bolt, as your current bolt fits your current barrel... For any new barrel, fit it to the new bolt...

As the snippet mentions, the only critical dimension is drilling the hole in the bolt for the cross pin used for the Savage bolt head. To paraphrase, measure twice, drill once.

In point of fact, when I measured, I measured with the Remington bolt closed in the receiver. It actually moved forward .010 as the bolt lifted. In short, I thought I was improving the timing of this real old Remington bolt...and wound up having to take .010 off the back of the Savage lugs so the bolt would close. We decided to call that little adventure "truing the lugs," though the Savage head didn't really need it. The Savage is a floating head, another nice feature.

Edit:

We also used the small diameter firing pin holed Savage lugs. Turned down the Remington firing pin to match. Rest of the firing pin work as in the snippet. Did not re-harden the firing pin -- if it ever had been, it worked very easy. No issues.

I have a 6mmPPC 700SA that was built by a smith at Mo Defino's (sp?) some years ago. Originally it was a 223 varmint. The top of the magazine follower was modifed (it has one of the solid followers, not the stamped ones), and it was cut short at the rear. There is a plastic block filler in the back of the magazine box. It works fine.
