6.5-284 Win to Norma?

I just purchased a 6.5-284 rifle with the Win chamber on it. I want to ream the chamber to a 6.5-284 Norma to use the better brass.

I have a few questions about this.

The neck it has is supposedly a "match chamber", but not a smaller neck diameter for turned brass. The barrel is only 26" now.

Should I set the barrel back enough to use a new tight neck chamber and lose about 1/2", or should I just have the Norma reamer run through and leave the neck like it is, then do a tight neck on a second set-back after some throat erosion?

Another question I have is, should I go with the Norma spec, or is there another variant of the 6.5-284 you recommend I attempt?

And finally, do you have any suggestions on who can perform the reaming?

Why don't you just buy Lapua 6.5X284 Win. brass from Bruno Shooters Supply? That way you have the best brass made, in my opinion, and you don't have to spend a lot of money.
 
hey mirage, your chamber could be about anything. I had a no turn neck once that shot very well. why not take kansasvet's advice and try some lapua brass before you spend money on your chamber.you may be happy with it! barrel life is pretty short on 6.6-284's, i probably would spend that money on a new barrel with a known chamber, later.good luck with your new rifle! lightman
 
I will go ahead and get the Lapua brass mentioned. Sounds about right; I will save the money for a new barrel when needed. Thanks for the heads up on the brass.
 
6.5 284 Win vs Norma

I think you made the right choice to buy the brass and check it out first.

I had a 6.5x284 win chamber cut and the Lupa brass would fit. Enless they cut the Win chamber on the tight side lupa brass will usally fit.

The problem I had was the throat for the Win is usally cut shorter. I could not shoot the 140's because the throat was cut like .0715 where a lapua chamber is usally cut somehting like .1800 ish. all it would take is a throating reamber to push it out to where the right bullet would fit, also freshining up the throat.
