Did a very similar project on a Ruger Redhawk in mid 80's. We were looking for accurate hunting handguns with reduced recoil. On a match grade blank, we counterbored an integral muzzle brake chamber and welded plug into end to seal it up. Directional slots cut on top and slabbed the sides. Initially we used open sights and just welded front sight into a milled slot but opted for 2X scope later on. Nickle plated the CM barrel to get close match to Ruger's stainless.
We made this 7.5" barrel and a 5.5" and 9.5". Short one blasted scope too much and 9.5" was too front heavy. Muzzle brake works good although ear protection is a MUST. Holstering is not an option so we added sling studs front and rear to sling it over your shoulder. Like other scoped handguns, a rest is a real asset ......it's just too heavy to hold offhand. Downed a few deer and a bunch of feral hogs. Shot mostly 240 gr JSP and the Sierra 250 Silhouette bullets.
