30ppc VS 30br

Is there any potential accuracy gain by going with a 30ppc over a 30br? How about recoil loss. Does the 30ppc have any less recoil? I
I traded a shotgun for a new rifle action, and i dont need anything but i know myself well enough to know i wont let it sit alone long in the safe either. I really enjoy all the short range super accurate chamberings like the 22 .100 short, 6ppc 30br. I love them all. Like i said i dont need a dam thing but i have been thinking about a 30ppc for a couple weeks now. What i am not sure is, is if it is worth the trouble of doing a 30ppc. I already have a 30br, and i am not real sure how difficult it is going to be to obtain 30ppc dies and brass. Not to mention the exspence. i dont know if Ron can make me some 30ppc brass or not. i havent asked him. I did read that Wilson will make you a seat die, but what about a FL size die.? Lots of not sures on this one. I know i would enjoy it very much though!! lee

Frankly the main and in my mind really only reason to do a 30PPC is if you don't have a 308 bolt face available. On paper the 30PPC may be as good but there is no available data to prove it in any way better than a 30BR.
Dies will be slightly harder to come by and powder selection not as good. I have several 30BR's and even a couple 30x47's and never had the slightest desire to do a 30PPC.
Still if you like a challenge have at it.

I hate to say but i kinda agree really! I really like my 30br so why bother. It does seem like a hassle. I just dont know what i am going to do with this action i traded for. maybe i can save my pennies for a year or so and do a rail gun? Or maybe ill just sell it? If i really thought there was something to gain by going with a 30ppc then the challenge wouldnt bother me, but as of yet im not convinced there is any gain. I can see the fun factor being there, but im not so sure that makes any since either! Like i said, I dont need anything, anyway! I think i just answered my own question! LOL!! Thanks anyway! Lee

One of the better shooters here on the Gulf Coast recently moved from a 30PPC to a 30BR because he became convinced he was leaving something on the table with his 30PPC. That might or might not be true but it is true that powder selection is more limited with the 30PPC.

Mike Ezell has me hooked on the 30major. I've only been shooting it a few weeks but results in practice have been very promising. It was an easy upgrade to my 6 ppc boltface.

Good input....

Good input Joe...now I wonder who that "one of the better" Gulf shooters could be????;)

My avatar looks a lot like his; but it was not me. I went straight to Jackie's Long Neck 30BR. It seemed a no brainer to me. Seems like I remember the guy with the green rifle trying a 30PPC as well in the past.

I developed my own version, mainly to satisfy the 10.5 pound Rifle thing, but to make the 112 grain bullet shoot, you have to push it into the "upper load window", making brass life a major issue.

The bottom line is most of these bullets that are designed for Varmint for Score like a velocity somewhere in the neiborhood of 2850 to 3000 fps. Whether you are going to get that with a big dose of 4227 in a true 30PPC, or 6-7 more grns of slower 4198 in a BR case, the felt recoil is about the same. So, since the BR is so darned user friendly, and shoots about as good as anything on the planet, the 30PPC got relagated to the "been there, done that" heap.

As was aid, if all you have is a PPC bolt face, then the PPC might be an option, or one of the other small head diameter case variants that are based on the Grendal case. Or you can rebate the rim on the BR case to work with a 6PPC bolt face.

I am surprised that one of the enterprising aftermarket supplyers, such as Hoehn, Bruno, Haydon, etc, hasn't set up a rig to rebate rims on a BR case, and sell them. There are a LOT of Rifles out there with PPC bolt faces whose owners just might want to build a 30BR.........jackie

This is what I am doing. I have a BAT 6 PPC and one 30 BR barrel that will be fitted to this action. I will just rebate the ring in the 6 BR case and have fun...

I agree! I wish i had a new box of bullets for every conversation pertaining to this subject that i have over herd or have been a part of in the past 3 years!
The action i have coming is a new defiance benchrest action, dual port combo bolt face coned bolt, polished, the works really! Glen seems to be a great fella and i am really looking forward to receiving this action October 1. What i will do with it, is a hole other deal. I had an old browning A5 in the gun cabinet collecting dust, and one thing lead to another, and now i have a new action on the way. Like i said a couple times, i dont need anything, and i am really happy with what i already own, but i guess i am just like anyone else, we all love new things and new rifle especially. I am not shooting my current 30br Like i think i should, or like the last one i had, so i was kinda thinking along those lines. I like the big 30cal BR cases as usually there are pretty simple to get shooting. I havent given up on this barrel yet but i have definitely given up on the current bullet i am shooting. I am going to try a shorter jacketed 30cal bullet and see what happens. If that doesnt satisfy me the barrel will come off and a 22ppc barrel will go on.
I just lucked out on a couple brand new 22ppc .100 short barrels for a super price. The LV is a new hart barrel chambered for a bat and the new krieger HV barrel is also for a bat. they were chambered the same day by the same smith with the same reamer about 3 years ago and never fired. I bought both barrels for less than the price of one new barrel chambered for my rifle, so i am pretty excited about that! I also really like these little 22cal ppc. Nice little holes. Makes the groups look super small!! LOL!!! So i have plenty to do without needing anything else, but I like the score game so i will have to have a 30cal. Maybe the new defiance action in a HV kelby club stock, chambered for a 30br, or 30 major will be the ticket??? Thanks for listening to me chatter about nothing!! LOL!! Have a nice evening fellas!!
