I know this is not a br question per say, but it is dealing with br cartridges. Which would be better for a light weight hunting rifle. I would like to use 125gr BT.

30-47(6.5x47)

Just started using 30 x47 based on 6.5x47
Had a reamer set up for 150gr. and it worked out very well !
It shooters 150 Sierra BT. 1/4-3/8 " with 24" brl. and H4198
Speed is 2800-2850 fps. and worked well on deer (165 lb. 8 pt.)

I know that the 308 was not mentioned but why not? Easy to find brass, dies, etc...and if you ever decide to get rid of it it will be a lot easier to sell/trade.

I dont think any are BETTER than the others. Thats why my main deer gun is a 30BR and the back up is 30x47. Have not shot a deer yet with the 47 though.

I don't understand the fascination with the 30 BR as a hunting cartridge. Over on 6BR there is a guy who thinks it would be a great 600 yd varmint caliber. What am I missing and I own 2 of them.

The gun will be used for close range 150 to 200yd max. I also want a light weight rifle that is easy to use ( it will be for my nephew & recoil shy).

MRL, 125grain BT is almost equal to a 270 with 130 gr. You figure a 30br pushes a 125 at roughly 2800 -3000fps from a 22 to 24in barrel.

There is every reason

to use a 30 BR for Deer hunting from my point of view. 2800 is 2800 no matter what size case it comes from. Why subject one's self to more recoil and burning more powder if one doesn't have to. Thousands and probably millions of Deer have been killed with 38-40's and 44-40. They were still being used here in Maine when I first started deer hunting back in the late 50's My first rifle was a 38-40. I suppose some are still being used today.

In other words consider it a rimless 30-30? Sorry I still don't see it; light rifle and low recoil, my 30 jumps with a 110gr bullet so it what am I missing? A 125gr 30 caliber bullet at 2800 = a 270 130gr bullet How? I guess I look at it, I would rather have power to spare if needed.

Then why not shoot a 50BMG?

I thank ya'll for the help I will move this conversation to the hybird forum. Once again thanks.

Why....

Why is this question on a Benchrest competition site and not a hunting site of which there are hundreds?

I thought that maybe you guys would know more about these rounds than your average hunting site. This is why I said that I was moving my question to the Hybird forum.
