308 175 SMK Velocity between 2604 & 2747

I did some load development and testing for my customised 308.

Using the recommended minimum (33 gn) and maximum (35 gn) of AR2208 (equivilant to Hodgdon Varget, IMR 4604, Accurate Arms AA2520) for 175 SMKs I have a Velocity at 4 meters staring at 2604 fps and finishing up at 2749 fps.

The jump is 0.005" with no signs of overpressure.

Just wondering if this sounds to good to be true and I'm missing something?

I want to see the maximum distance I can reliably hit targets given optimal conditions for this calibre.

Are you sure your load isn't 43gr/45gr respectively? That would be more compatible with Varget.

2749fps will get you to 1000 yards+

Your charge weights are suspect...

45gr of Varget will get you close to 27XXfps velocity with 175gr SMKs .

35gr of Varget would get you aprox 2220fps with 175gr SMKs....

I think I might not have explained my self properly.

I started my loads of with a powder weight of 33 gns which was my lowest powder weight.
This gave me a velocity of approx 2604 fps.

I then increased my powder loads at 0.5 gns at a time. So I had 5 x 33 gns, 5 x 33.5 gns, 5 x 34 gns, 5 x 34.5 gns and finished with 5 x 35 gns.

So at 33 gns I had a velocity of 2604 and at 35 gns I had 2749 fps.

From what I have read from your replies these values are about right.

Except that your powder charge is apparently 10 ( TEN ) grains low .......:confused:

Check your scales is all I can say !

cut and paste from current ADI reloading data for .308 Win.

varget and 175 smk's

I'm shooting 175 SMK's with around 43.0 grains of Varget to around 2730 fps. The barrel is a 30" Kreiger. The listed charge weights seem very low.
