I just inherited a mauser action rifle that has 300 Apex stamped on the barrel, does anyone have info about this cartridge? Dies?

The 300 Apex is a wildcat cartridge. It was cut down to 30/06 length. There are dies available for it. It should be similar to a 300 Winchester Magnum. I would cary it to a gunsmith you trust and get his advise on how to make the ammo for this or to re-chamber it to something that you could buy off the shelf.

300 Apex /300 Pfeifer

The 300 Apex I am familiar with is based on a slightly blown out 300 H&H case or necked down 375. It is almost identical to a 300 Pfeifer I have. Apex barrels was owned by Sam May, who at one time worked for Joe Pfeifer in his shop. I can only surmise that Sam took the cartridge design when he opened his own shop in the early 50s. There is a drawing of the Pfeifer case in Dunlaps gunsmithing book. Given the above it is still prudent to make a chamber cast to make sure. It was not uncommon to rechamber and not remark the barrel. The 300 Weatherby comes to mind. The reloading dies I have for both were made by RCBS and I would contact them if and when you determine the exact chambering.

300 Apex / 300 Super Apex

In doing a little further research it appears that there was a 300 Apex, based on a shortened 300 H&H originally necked down to 6.5 as the 6.5 Apex then up to 30 cal as the 300 Apex. The 300 super Apex was based on the full length 300H&H case. This from Ackley's research and book. My rifle is marked 300 Apex but is chambered for the full length case. Again reason to make a chamber cast. The RCBS dies with the rifle are marked 300 Apex s. On older die sets very often the size die is marked with s. In this situation it stood for super not size. Hope I didn't lead you astray with the first reply.

best of luck with your rifle
both Joe Pfeifer and Sam May made
wonderful barrels!

Badger,

You might want to read the excellent article, "APEX", in the July '08 PS by J.C. Munnell. He tells about his work with a .300 he acquired. Back isssues are available from the publisher.

Good shooting:D
