30 BR case forming??

I have a number of once fired Norma 6mmBR cases that I have used the K&M step tool to size the necks of to 30 caliber. They all have a small area (about .010") above the shoulder that is approx .010" larger in diameter than the neck. I have run the cases through a Whidden full length bushing die in atempt to size this portion of the case downward, but cannot get this enlarged area sized to the above neck diameter.

I annealed the cases before sizing the necks up.

The cases will need to be turned to fit the chamber and if I turn them with this raised area above the neck I believe I will have a VERY thin neck portion just above the shoulder. What am I doing incorrectly , or interpreting incorrectly?

Just a babe in arms concerning this cartridge, but I do not want to spoil 100 cases.......

shoulder back another .020. That will give you all the neck you want for turning.

George, what you are seeing is normal. When the case neck is expanded up, part of the shoulder becomes a part of the neck...that lower little bit of it. The brass in the shoulder is thicker and that's why you get the "bulge" you describe. That said, turning it to the same diameter as the rest of the neck won't result in it being thinner than the rest of it. Go ahead and turn the necks all the way back until the cutter kisses the shoulder. That's how it's done and what you are seeing is normal.

The expander on the neck turner will push the thicker brass to the outside and it can be trimmed away in the neck turning operation.
