284 Winchester - 180gr Berger Hybrids - First Loads

Good evening all.

I am in the process of building a 284 Win on a Bat M action and a 30-32" barrel and wanting to know what is a good starting load for the first firing of the new brass using H4831SC with 180gr Berger Hybrids.

The other question I have not settled on yet is chambering for this bullet combination. I want to seat the bullet so the beginning of the bearing surface is above the neck / shoulder junction. Will a reamer with .188 free-bore be enough to allow this seating depth?

Thanks

My 284 is a legal NBRSA 600/1000 yard Light Gun, based on a Bat M. It us s neck up 6.5/284 Lapua with a .313 neck.

The reamer I use is specifically designed for the 180 Berger Hybrid. It puts the bullet so that the straight/boat tail junction is about 1/8 inch above the neck shoulder junction.

My best load is 55 grns of 4831 SC with about .020 bullet jump. That is a flat 2850 fps out of a 28 inch barrel.

This load will shoot under 1.250 inches at 600 yards, and shows no signs of high pr sure.

That 54 grns will be fine to get through the first firing.

That freebore will work with Hybrids but be a little short for VLD's, you'll need around the 0.220 for VLD's.

with .190" freebore for 120 odd grain bullets so I think the .220 is about right for that bullet. Good luck with yours.
