What bullet is good to start with for accuracy loading for a .243, 9 1/8" twist barrel. What is the maximun weight projectile i should use with this twist. I looked on 6mmBR.com and didn't get a lot of info for match bullets..

I went back and looked again. I didn't read far enough.. Also... You seldom read anything mentioned here about Barnes Bullets. Are the specifically a hunting bullet or do they have a place in the accuracy dept?

243 bullets

Kimberguy2004: One of my many favorites is the Sierra 85 gr. HPBT "GameKing" # 1530. A hunting bullet, but performs like a match-grade. I've used them out to 300 yds., in my 6BRs', and side-by-side comparisons with some match bullets have proven their accuracy potential. These were also used in a 1-9.25 twist, loaded velocities of 2990 chronographed with N135 powder.

.243

lapua brass; I 4064 37.5gr; 85 sierra bthp. you pick the primer. never had a 243 that would not shoot that load

95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips have worked well for me in every 243 I have loaded for.

I have two of the same gun as you have.......

the 80g Sierra with Win brass with 41.0g of IMR 4064 with a fed 210 primer shoots 3450 fps with 3/8" groups.

With the other rifle, the load of 43.5g of Win 760 with the 70g Nosler BT is unreal, and 39.0g of IMR 4064 shoots fantastic with the same bullet.

I seat the bullets to just barely touch the lands.

Good luck!

Kimberguy,

Unless, your trying to get every last bit off accuracy out of your gun I'd save my money and use some of the premium bullets mentioned above. I'd try the ones in the 90-105gr range. They're lots of great bullets out there. You'll just have to try to find out what combo your gun prefers!!!! :D

my .243 load

The .243 load my VLS with the 9 1/8 twist liked was:
Bib 67 grain bullet, Lapua brass, Fed GM primer and IMR 4350. The Bibs were seated to just touch the lands. This combo won a few matches for me. Jim

87gr V-Max will pierce 1/2" plate

Fired out of my 6x284 at 25 yds. At 378 yards they will cut a crater in that same material.

.243 win

kimber sorry i did not answer your question. i tried 95 berger out of a remington vls. tried a lot of loads . nothing really good. you could try the 105 a-max. may or may not stabilize. 105 berger and 107 i would say definetly won't. so a 100 grain and down.

I've only used 87gr V-Max's and 75gr HP Hornady out of my 700 VLS with the 9 1/8" twist. Both are .5 moa, have only shot the 87's out to 600 yds., and use the 75's for 300 yds.

My brother in-law copied my 600 yd. load for deer hunting.

Bill Scheider is making Fowler Bullets in 6mm, I think both 66gr & 80gr, I tested some of his first batch 66's in a PPC that belong to Frank Parker,,,, they shot good, I mean REALLY GOOD, send him a PM, he's a regular here too or call him @ 843-442-3493 or 843-522-3651

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,

I use Beger 105s in a 1:8 twist. You might try their 95 VLDs.

The Rem 700

Youth model that I have in .243 Win stabilizes the 105 A-Max's at 500 yards. I have not shot it beyond that distance. My testing with it is ever so slight as the load was developed as a last minute deer load. I am running them around the 2950 mark with RL 19. I plan to so more shooting with it in the spring.
From my measurements the 105 A-Max has the longest bearing surface between the Berger and SMK's. I would think they should stabilize as well but I have yet to try them.

The main load from my setup is with the 55gr Blitzkings for coyotes. It will cloverleaf them at 100 yards in front of some H380 and seating them out as far as you feel comfortable with. They are not even close to the lands but shoot pretty darn GOOD. I have them leaving at just over 3600 fps.

Yesterday I took a couple of shots at 500 yards off my bipod laying prone. The gun is sighted in 1.5" high at 100. I needed 7 min of elevation to get there and put the 2 shots about 2" appart with approx 5mph crosswind at around 45deg. I was a happy camper. Just need to verify my comeups and coyotes beware out to 500.;)
