Ted,
I've done really well with a 1 in 10" twist in a .243 AI with the 87 grn. V-Maxes. When I went to heavier bullets, like the 95 grn. Berger MEF's or Nosler Ballistic Tips were less than spectacular. My next .243 AI barrel will be a 1 in 8" which will cover everything from 87 grn. on up. If I were in your shoes, I would go with a 1 in 8".

I have a Shilen stainless SM 1:8" twist on my Farley 6mm BR varmint rifle that I was shooting 105gr A-Max's, but decided to see if it would shoot ok with lighter varmint bullets. I did a few incremental loads with 70 and 75 grain bullets and detected a preference for the 75gr V-Max. I loaded up 5 at 3100 fps and went to the range. The first shot out of a clean oiled barrel hit about 1/4" low and right. The next 4 wallowed out a .064" bug hole. Don't be afraid of an 8" twist with the lighter bullets. Good barrels with good bullets don't care if the twist rate is a little fast. I'm anxious to try this load on prairie dogs to see if the extra rotational energy will contribute to prairie dog aerobatics.
A 12 twist will work perfect in your 243 AI for 87 gr.Vmaxs.I use 12 twist in my 6-284s and standard 243 ,244 (6mm).All these cartridges will stabilize up to a 95 gr soft point but not a tipped or VLD at that weight.my expeirence anyhow
