223 ackley twist?

Hello: I want to build a 223 ackley for shooting varmints.I have a match grade barrel #5 in a 8 twist. Will this barrel shoot 50,52,and 55's I am looking for 1/2" groups or shoud I buy a new one with a different twist? thanks Jerry
 
lots of 8 twist bbls have shot 52/55's very well ....this does not mean yours will.
i would think a 10 twist would be better, 12 would work better and if sticking with 50/52's then a 1/14.

now why go to improved if sticking with 50-55 gr bullets ??.....std will do excellent.

You will have to try and see if they will shoot. I would guess yes. My old Savage is a 9 twist and shoots the 50g Vmax great. My 223 AI is a 14.

A 223 is a great cartrige I think the ackley is even better I have seen 9 twist shoot very very well but I am not sure about the 8 if i buy a new barrel I think i will get a 10 or 12 twist a faster twist seems two have a more explosive
effect on varmints than a slower one I am not sure of that but that is what I think anyway

223 Ai

I have 4 of these - all 12 twist. I shoot 50 gr. Nosler BT at Prarie Dogs.

I tried a 9 twist but could not get the accurace I wanted.

Jerry, Built several 223 and other chamberings with 8 and 9 twist barrels. Great accuracy with 40 gr Noslers and weights to 70 grain. All were varmint rifles, but the accuracy you mention was there. Good luck.

If you have an 8 twist, you may have a long throat as well, which may aid you in making a decision on bullet choice.

I have a buddy in Va. that loaded the 75g V max in his 22/250, and he said that the bullet did not kill worth a darn and gave them up. He said that chucks kept making it back to their hole, acting as if they had never been hit.

Some guys have reported great success with the 75g A-Max while others report dismal terminal effects...it's your time to be the experimentor if you do decide to go that direction.

In my 223 AI, I load of 28.5g of N-135 with the 55 Nosler Ballistic tip in IMI brass with a 7 1/2 primer at 3550 fps out of a 27" Hart 14 twist MHV barrel with zero freebore. I would not suggest that you use anything but IMI or Lapua brass with this load and start off at 27.0g and go up to as pressure allows. I shot this load again today and accuracy is amazing in my rifle with the cases only needing neck siziing after firing. 28.5g of N-135 is a compressed load and is put in the case slowly. Loading this load is a pain, but shooting bug hole groups with 55g Noslers makes it worth the effort.
