Hi

Anyone have information regarding the better powders to use in the 308 Win when shooting 190 SMK's? Thanks for any info you have.

Steve

Most of the normal .308 powders work pretty well w/ the 190s. IMR 4064, Varget, and RE-15 have all worked for me; my current first pick would be RE-15 as I really like the results I've gotten from it... and I have a 5# jug under the bench.

Good luck,

Monte

Thanks for the Info. I tried 4064 and it also worked as well as Varget. I found that RE15 in my rifle didn't work as well but only tried 1 load with it as a sample. May have to retry the powder. Thanks, Steve

I had best luck with 4064 after trying 4350, Varget and a few others.

I tried all of the powders mentioned with 190 MK and N550 was the winner. Very accurate and superrrrrrrr FAST!

190 SMK's

Hi guys

Here is the final results after several months testing. I tried Re15, Varget, 4064, and IMR 4895.

Re-15 gave poor results for the samples I tried but went on to other powders before thoroughly testing this powder. Will go back in the future for a retesting.

Varget gave excellent groups as long as long as it was balls to the wall. I was getting some extractor markings on the case so I quit using the powder because the loads that were reduced weren't as accurate.

4064 was extremely accurate with both 42.2 and 40.5 both of which were Sierra's recommended accuracy loads.

IMR 4895 was the final winner for group size. 41.5, BR2 primers, Lapua cases, 2.880" OAL. Was slightly better than 4064. Would keep all shots in the X ring on the new F class targets at 300 meters if I do my part.

Ive just returned from a crono session with the 308 ,175 bullets. I tried H4350 N540 and N550.
N550 has a slight edge over H4350 in velocity and a bigger edge in velocity spread. I will be using N550 from now on. They both beat N540, so it is.
1st N550
2nd H4350
3rd N540

308+N550=30-06 obsolete!

Not quite. Myself and several others on Sniper's Hide have been running 190SMK's at 2900+fps out of our .30-06's for the past 7 years. There is no substitution for case capacity when using heavy for caliber bullets.

Considering the 7.5x55 was available long, long time ago, I wonder why anyone bothered with the 308. I like Winchester's approach: they just necked it down to 7mm and voila we have a .284Winchester a great caliber!

I'm right there too, but with 308, well, except the 7 years.

Tesla,

You're right where? You can't get 2900fps with a 190SMK out of a .308. There simply isn't enough case capacity.
