has anyone ever put flags at the hieght of the bullets path for 1000 yd shooting ?

i see the peak of my load at 8 ft above the line of sight .........
since byers shoots from a berm..line of sight is about 8 ft (??) above the ground...

this puts a 500/600 yd flag at 16 feet ????

been done ???
thanks
mike

Mike - IIRC, aren't there berms at several of the yardages to accomodate Hipower shooters? Couldn't your flags be placed on these berms?

And, just out of curiosity, why do you want your flags at the height of trajectory? And would they be legal at that height?

one at the bench, one at 5/600, one at 900.....

I added a comment about them being legal at that height. I don't know what the IBS rules say about that.

Why not use the range flags?

Ray

Mike,
Not to take anything away from long range shooters that use their own flags but the best shooters that I know just use the range flags and mirage and do extremely well or better ;). With that in mind I have elected to not put up my own flags and just read the range flags and mirage and learn from my mistakes. The guys I refered to earlier in the post have proven that is entirely possible, you just need to hone your skills.

Hope I see you in a couple weeks.

but there is one guy , that does well and shoots off his own flags...right ???

again why not put the flags where the bullets are ??

one of my std flags at full hieght will work at 900.....
my 500/600 yd would still be in my shooting lane....just a bit high....

the rules.....

R)
Wind Flags
1)
Official wind flags shall be a minimum size, 1.5" x 24", but personal flags of any size, placed below the line of bullet flight, by the competitor, will be permitted but shall not be moved after the warm-up except by Range Personnel.

At several of the IBS Nationals at Quantico, we put yellow and black range flags down the middle of the range on 15ft bamboo poles. We had range flags on the sides at 300, 600, 800 and the pits.

well mine is nearly complete. 4ft sections of pipe, 3 staked tension cords....flag is 24 x 18, red/ red border black center. 36" red tail. main post is 13' adjustable section is another 3'.
see everyone next sunday.

we are allowed...the rule book says under my bullet path. path is aprox 16 feet.....remember we shoot from a high berm. so 8 feet for the berm and another 8 feet for the flight path.
those dashers are 12 ft or more above line of sight ..add 8 to that...they are way over me.

If you are not allowed to place the flags that high, why are you doing it?

i shoot left hand, so will request a bench with another leftie ordeal with it.
no they will not be blocking the line of sight in any case.
the flag will be aprox EIGHT FEET above line of sight.....the post is aprox 1inch in dia..i think we can find a spot that would allow a left and a right shooter on the same bench without being in anyones line of sight. but a typical answer from mesh....thinks line of sight and a 15' flag are in the same sight path for a 1000 yd shoot......

First off, since when are we allowed to "request a bench" for any reason...bench assignments must be drawn. Second, the rule is below the flight of the bullet....but maybe my bullet is WAAYYY flatter than yours...you must also be below MY bullet flight, also, and maybe I am shooting a .375 cal bullet with a BC of 1.5 at 4600 FPS..only need 8 moa to 1000.

multiple relays means like shooters can be benched on the same bench so flags are not an issue...( a lefty or myself pull a first relay bench, the other request to share the bench in the next relay so we can share benches/flags.....sorry i see it done all the time...heck they even post here asking to share in advance for planning purposes)

most of the guys seem to shoot dashers or 300 win mag....there are a few others...but it appears the 300 win mag has the flatest trajectory...so i think i'm good.
tod when you bring a flatter shooting gun, AND we get on the same bench , we will deal with it...until then it aint an issue.
( i just checked again..the dashers are over 20 FEET above the line of sight...thats 12 feet above my 300 win mag and my flag)

you gonna be there next sunday ??

Well, another typical answer from Mike, he seems to think the bullet spends it's ENTIRE trip at the apex of the path. Newsflash, it isn't 20' up for the entire path, most bullets would never be 20' up. But hey, go piss around and spend all morning finding out who will shoot on bench 1 so guys with similar trajectories won't shoot each others flags! This is too funny. Multiple relays makes this easier alright. Great Idea!

I want to see these flags at 200 yards, elevation set to the bullet path, and between the benches. This is gonna be interesting. Benches at any range I have ever shot are not 15' apart. Most MUCH closer. Well, excepting Quantico and there iirc, they skip every other target, yes Herman? And even there I'd be surprised if benches were 15' c-c. But with that being a very best case scenerio, I'd be skeptical this'll work at many ranges. Not that it'll ever happen anyhow.

Mike

It's just my opinion but my experience tells me that things like this sound good but they usually end up being dicarded after one or two uses.

I'm still having a hard time understanding how you came up with the figure of 20' above the line of sight. I realize the benches at Byers are elevated, but the same is true at most other 1000 yard ranges. The targets are usually designed so that they are at the same elevation as the benches so there isn't a lot of shooting uphill or downhill. The intermediate berms to accomodate Palma, F Class and Hi Power are usually at the same level as the benches and targets. A cartridge like a typical 6mm shooting a 105 grain VLD at 3100 fps has a mid-range trajectory of less than 90 inches, or approx 16 MOA. If you put a flag at the 500 yard berm it would have to be only 6 or 7 feet high. Mid-range trajectory is typically about 1/3 of total drop.

Am I figuring something wrong?? It is Sunday and maybe my brain is still asleep.

How about "just show up and shoot", for the sake of God man, stop complicating things geeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Wind Flages

Always thought it would be easier to use smoke from a smudge pot, to actually see what the wind was doing. And I don't mean everyone have one in front of them. Maybe one or two. Haven't seen one in years.
