    222 Rem best twist

Don’t remember like I use to. They were 69gr. flat base. They quit making them a few years back.

    222 Rem best twist

Pete, If I would have been the shooter the problem would probably have been me! Your twist rate was on the quick side but certainly within specs. Maybe the barrel? The bullet was certainly in right weight range. A while back Berger made a 70gr bullet that had a 9 ogive. They recommended a 12”...

    222 Rem best twist

I guess I should have made clear that that I was referring to the early days of the AR rifles. Back in the early 60’s when I was in Pittsburg Eugene Stoner showed up looking for some one to do some work for his company. At that time they were experimenting with 14” or maybe it was 12” barrels...

    222 Rem best twist

In fact Sierra still makes a 63 gr. semi point bullet that shoots very good with a 14” twist. The length determines twist rate not weight

    222 Rem best twist

Back in the days before the .223 all .224 center fire cartridges were 14” twist. In fact the .223 started life at 14” then 12” an then 9”. We can thank the military for that. The original 14” barrels in colder weather would not stabilize the military 55 gr. solid jacket bullets very well. They...

I agree with you completely. I am acquainted with a few of our top U.S. and Canadian short range benchrest shooters and I think you would find them in total agreement.

    Stan Taylor has passed away-RIP

I called the shop this morning and they said he was at home and it was a heart attack. I guess it makes little difference as he is gone. It reminds me that all we have is today. Will miss our conversations.

    Stan Taylor has passed away-RIP

Got a barrel from him today. Talked to him about two weeks ago with never any indication there was any thing was wrong. In fact I believe he said he was looking forward to his first match this year. This comes as a sad surprise. He always treated me right.

    Mike Gambel left the range

Heidi and I stopped last summer for a nice visit with Mike and his wife. I guess “one day at a time” is really all we have. I will miss him.

bencfh rest rifles from late 60s to early 70s

I still have a sleeved xp put to gather by PJ and Clyde Hart. It’s in one of the old original Brown synthetic stocks. The sleeve continues about 3”-3.5” past the front of the receiver, but only the bottom half. I believe this was the transition from wood hence the extra bedding surface. I’m...

What tool / cutter setup do you use to turn rifle barrel shanks?

Gene, You are 100% correct! I have been grinding and using HSS for the last sixty years on my old antique south bend lathes. 99% of my bits I grind by hand including my threading bits. In the old days some of the twist drills and tool bits were high carbon steel. These did a good job IF you...

What is the most accurate factory rifle you've owned?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the sako rifles that were made in a single shot heavy barreled version. They were made for two years and part of a third year. The first year were AXXX the next year was BXXX an the last year was CXXX. Mine was the second year B. It was a 6 ppc and it shot...

    DYI Scope Repair

For the what it’s worth department:Years ago a friend of mine worked for the Unertl Optical Company. At the time John Unertl junior was calling the shots. Back then they were heavily involved in government work even though John Sr. had a soft spot in his heart for sportsmen. One day during a...

    DYI Scope Repair

Many years ago a fellow I was working with decided to clean up the inside of his 18X 2” Unertl. Those things had the crosshairs mounted in a brass cylinder just ahead of the eye piece. The magnification on those old scopes was the eyepiece. I guess he was going to a higher power and as long as...

    Some barrel making history

I agree with you! But that’s the way Douglas still does it. Remington ( Walker) used the same method back when they plug rifled. I think part of the reason was that in the early days they were having a hard time finding the right lubrication. In the early days before Walker if I remember right a...
