    More on LT-32

Skeet, What bullet are you using. I'm going out tomorrow to try LT32 and Berger column bullets for the first time. BTW, my LT32 has a white sticker on the bottom that reads 3 and 03 20.13. I assume it's lot 3 and the rest is a date. Regards, Ron

    A couple threading questions

No more difficult than threading up to a shoulder. Relief cuts may have their place in special circumstances, but it's just too easy to do the job without them. Regards, Ron

    A couple threading questions

Pete, The problem with any relief cut is when you need to extend the thread a bit more, the relief cut will be in the middle of the threads. Relief cuts force you to cut the whole thread off & start over which can be a problem when barrel is already short. Flipping the tool over & threading in...

    3 jaw chuck runout?

simple way to put pressure on the jaws One simple way to put pressure on the jaws for truing: Drill a hole in the front of each jaw - 3/16" or 1/4". Insert a pin in each hole & tighten on a ring to put pressure on the jaws. Using the tool post grinder to true the jaws is done to remove...

    Question for Milgunsmith

putting ball bearing on the steady rest fingers. Not exactly the same, but I was thinking of modifying my conventional steady rest to run on the small ball bearings that are used on wood router bits. My thought is these bearings are commonly available & run at a gazillion rpm on the router...

    3 jaw chuck runout?

Even if you true the jaws with the tool post grinder at a particular diameter, how do you know it will still be true when you scroll to a different diameter? My humble opinion is that you don't. Your mileage may vary. Regards, Ron

    A couple threading questions

Al, If you've every let your mind wander while threading, when that needle starts moving it will wake you up! Not that I ever day dream, so I'm only talking hypothetically of course. ;) Regards, Ron

    A couple threading questions

As you disengage the carriage with one hand, back the tool out with the other. I thread in slow back gear & use a 1" indicator on the carriage to show when to stop. Set the indicator so it has one full revolution before you kick the tool out & stop the carriage. Works for me. Your mileage may...

    Scratches from pilot bushing

How much did you cut off the muzzle end before you crowned it? Could the scratches have been there before it ever saw the reamer pilot? Regards, Ron

    south bend 9" questions

most reasonable way to fix your bed Mike, Last Saturday, I talked to a couple of guys who were in the tool rebuilding business. They agreed that having your bed scraped or reground would be more $$ than it's worth. They suggested looking around for another bed that you could swap as more cost...

    Helping others with gunsmithing questions..

Look for a good used one... Some yrs ago, my Starrett came in a gerstner oak box loaded with quality tools. The previous owner had retired from Pratt&Whitney and had fed his family out of that box for 40 yrs. We made a deal & he was really just passing them along to someone who'd appreciate...

    Modifying Optics on rifle scope

Hardrock, Mr Siebert did fine work. I'd keep the Lyman/Siebert & get a new scope - a Weaver if you're on a budget, Leopold if you can do it. The Lyman is a great scope, but it's 30+ yrs old. I have a Lyman/Siebert 30 & I'm looking for a wood stocked 40XBBR 222 to put it on for a '70 period...

    Stock inletting

James, Doing it with a mill is a good way to ensure the inletting is in line with the stock, which is essential for good tracking. It doesn't matter what diameter ball endmill you have. Just think of the geometry of rolling a ball of the endmill's diameter along a circle of the action's diameter...

Would it be possible to chamber both ends of a barrel?

Obvious question.... How would it shoot? I know it's fireforming, but would such a "complicated crown" shoot any "worse" than any other crown as long as it's centered. My guess is that it may not. Regards, Ron

    222.5 Information

It's less case prep than a lot of cases. Just put through a FL die, turn the necks, and shoot. I think the long case neck of the deuce is an advantage. Regards, Ron

    222.5 Information

    Nothing standard about these. I sometimes call mine a 222 3/8 rather than a 222 1/2. It's just that I have a 222 mag reamer with a 244 neck, so that's what I used. Regards, Ron
