savage chambering with nut - I know, I know....

Mike deserves a lot of credit. A newbie, he rebuilt a WWII vintage south bend lathe so that it's very nice, learned to grind his tools, and cuts nice threads. We inspected his 300 wsm chamber, throat, & crown with my bore scope - they looked up to snuff as well. The green mountain looked quite...

    leupold comp series scope

Skeet, I have one back at Leupold right now. One month it was fine, and the next I couldn't predict the shots. When they go bad, it can happen quickly. To their credit, the return process is very good. You download & fill out the service form. I shipped by USPS priority shipping. They responded...

savage chambering with nut - I know, I know....

Mike, I can bring over my bore scope & we can give the throat & crown an inspection. It might cost you a cup of coffee. I would think you could strip the ejector & extractor out of the bolt head & just hold the bolt against the headspace gauge in the chamber to get the clearance. Use a feeler...

    Recoil Lugs

The only one I've seen bent was the thin factory on an old Savage 110. I replaced it with a stock Remington lug that was in the junk box. Regards, Ron

    Hawkeye Lighting

PMpcwhocares , The maglite uses cheap AA batteries, but the Nova uses expensive batteries in a "tactical" light. I have both & use the mini maglite with the LED bulb. Regards, Ron

    recommended machinist book or handbook

So far some really good reference books have been recommended. I'd recommend the Machinist's Bedside Reader series by Guy Lautard as a entertaining read as well as a reference. They're not "Machining for Dummies", but you'll enjoy them and they are soft cover & inexpensive. The first volume...

    Shut 'er down!!

If they are nonessential, then why do they have a job at all? I'm sure the deputy assistant pastry chef at the White House is labelled nonessential! Regards, Ron

    bore scope

Lee, My wife bought me one for Christmas several years ago along with the "upgraded" light. It turns out that the upgrade is not worth it. I prefer to use the mini-mag light with a LED bulb. So save your money on that, but get the focus model. Regards, Ron

    Plugs and muffs

The best muffs I could find were 33 dB, non-electronic, and were not the most expensive ones. For me, the electronic muffs just don't do the job. I had an expensive set of electronic muffs, but they didn't seem to be as protective as the 33dB muffs. regards, Ron

    Sorry for the "intermission"

Wilbur, When I logged on to the forum the morning of the "intermission", I got a transient message of "hacked by....", so I'd examine your system thoroughly. Regards, Ron

    Help with Carbide Inserts

DSM, You have the numbers on the sticker on the lid - TCMM 322 and TT 322. Look in the MSC catalog for these. Regards, Ron

    Scale Report

Boyd, Nice summary on tuning the scale. I had not thought of "wrapped the leveling screw with a few turns of teflon tape, to take the wiggle out." I have a lot of experience with quality lab balances that weigh to 0.1 mg. Our Lab balances are on 24-7 and still there's some drift to the...

    coaxial indicator

Al, Anything is possible, but they're not made for that & they read in .001. You could put one in the headstock & indicate the tailstock into alignment, but that's about it. They are of more use in the mill, but your mileage may vary. Why in the world are you worrying about this at 1:40 AM...

    polish the throat

Back when BC frequented the rimfire forum, he talked about using a hob (his term) to finish a chamber, but never gave any details. I suspect this discussion is getting close to what he wants to accomplish his procedure. Also Gordy Gritters talked about lapping a bore with 150 to 220 grit...

Does a barrel tenon need an undercut at the end of thread?

"Prototrak 1630 lathe with conversational programing I run in full CNC mode" I'd give my left one to have such a machine & the knowledge to use it! Many of us use machines that are primitive compared to yours but still get the job done with no relief cut. The area left at the shoulder is...
