My next build is a 300 WSM any tips.

Good morning Jerry, Ha! I have not been moose hunting in 4 years (where I was the shooter at least). Permits are hard to come by.....I have shot 3 in my life. 2 with a 35 Whelen and 1 with a 7mm STW. I always go to help when a friend pulls a permit though... I really want a 300 WSM..thought it...

My next build is a 300 WSM any tips.

Santa has been good to me...she said I can build another toy. I'm ordering some redding dies and Norma brass soon. I have a Broughton 12" twist 5C barrel. Have a Mcmillan stock. Will buy a 700 action and tune it up. Any suggestions on necks, freebore etc.? Ben

    Tapering a straight barrel.

I do not have a taper attachment. I used the steel tooling primarily for the aforementioned job. In fact the only carbide i'm using at all for gun work is small boring bars with soldered tools, for preboring before chambering. Ben

Selling a long gun to a Canadian

This is a Remington 700 action. Can anyone recommend an exporter that has decent prices? Ben

    Tapering a straight barrel.

I tried both and did better with my own tools. I had something similar to Dennis' below. Carbide takes more pressure and more heat. I do not have coolant on my lathe at home. So, I was hand pouring with a drip pan. pita The end product was a fairly heavy bbl, so, the tolerances may not have...

cleaning up duracoat on a rifle crown

I would not use a dremel, especially if you have no lathe to repair it. Paint stripper at the local hardware removes durocoat. use a q-tip then a cleaning brush.

cleaning up duracoat on a rifle crown

Stripz-em or equivalent Methylene chloride based solvent removes duracoat from a barrel very effectively.

    Tapering a straight barrel.

Well...I only tapered one SS Shilen barel .308 from straight 1.250 to a #7 contour. I offset the tailstock and went for it. It was hell to turn, with chatter, constant tool sharpening, etc etc. All the problems as predicted. Lots of work with a flat file and sanding to remove chatter. I've...

    carbide tutorial please

Not really applicable here, but I've seen taps washed out of turbine casings with torches. You heat the tap up red with a small cutting tip and shut the gas off, and only use oxygen to burn the tap. Was quite interesting..

Selling a long gun to a Canadian

Thanks Dennis, I thought you might be up to date on this. I'll dig further into the details of an export license. I hope it's not cost prohibitive.

Selling a long gun to a Canadian

Q: As a private sale, can I sell a bolt action hunting/benchrest rifle to a friend of mine that lives in Canada. He comes to my home frequently. He is familiar with the Canadian laws and has firearms at his home, but I want to make sure it is within US law to sell him a gun. Once he has...

    What is my next step?

The crown was fine, but I re-cut it anyway already...no change. My explanation was an example...sometimes the first 2 are 2 inches apart, and the first shot can be anywhere in a 2" circle. The rifle doesn't shoot. Cold, hot or in between.

    What is my next step?

Jim, I'm not sure how to check this, but there are two things to mention. The firing pin is striking quite well centered (by eye) in the middle of the primer. I did have 1 misfire in my first few shots, where the pin did not detonate the primer. I stripped the bolt and found lots of sticky...

    What is my next step?

Mike, your very thorough, and I like the quantified approach. I'll try that. My go by feel method leaves a lot of doubt indeed. It's funny, when I'm embarrassed to type it, I can only admit to myself it must be sloppy. To rebed, if necessary, can I just sand up the surface off the old bed and...

    What is my next step?

Hmmm...I have a pile of factory barrels that wouldn't touch the stock...but I'm not sure they will do much better than 2". And a 308 win Broughton that is a great shooter...but is too big for the stock. Maybe after trying the new stock, if it still shoots crap, then I'll screw on the Broughton...
