    Customer service rant

If you run XP 2000 and have a corporate edition office package it may freeze up when you attempt to install SP3. The only solution is to pony up and buy the newer office 2007. Now you have it... It's called engineered obscelescence....... IT (Information Technology) rules the world. Ben

    Bad threading job

HMMM.....Laser engraved name, threading of a butcher, 6,5x284... are there pipe wrench marks? The plausible explanation is a setback by a second person. I hesitate to say gunsmith in present company.

    Best caliber for 1000 yards

What does bbl hardness have to do with cartidge pressures? I have been living under the belief that it was land/groove variance that drove pressure variance...barrel to barrel...on any given load. Ben

    Best caliber for 1000 yards

Thanks Matt, I'm getting ready to order a reamer, so I will get with PTG and find out what freebore is appropriate with 175 grain SMK's and 190 Gr. VLD's. I'm glad to hear about a no turn/skim neck. I've been running a .334 neck in short range (30BR and 30x47HBR) and it's labor intensive. Ben

    Best caliber for 1000 yards

Matt, What neck and freebore do you recommend for the 300 wsm? I have a 12 twist Broughton barrel in the shop. I'm assuming I will be best suited with the 175 grain bullets. Any lessons learned is appreciated. Ben

    180 VLDs 7mm rem mag

Sorry, but groups only degrade as a function of distance. It's complex physics, but to get the basics. Start by researching velocity spread (ES) what causes it, and how to manage it... and wind drift.

    270 accuracy baseline

Sierra matchkings would be the first thing I would try. Bed the action and float barrel. Try other powders mentioned above, such as H4831. Then Lets see what 5, 5 shot groups look like.

Intro to barreling or something similar

Greg, You are starting off on the right foot...research. Depending on your aptitude, you could pick up a small lathe with tooling and machine tool book and start widdling on some stuff. There are lots of good books out there. Most people, interested in a subject learn very quickly. Where...

    Rebarrel CZ 550 Varmint

There is a 5 shot test target only beside it.... a single hole, but it is not a proper evaluation of the rifle. I will say it is very accurate for a no-turn neck. Or skim neck. Like I said, I cannot find the reamer print and I'm not home to get a hard copy. You can email PTG and they will send...

My next build is a 300 WSM any tips.

Ha! I enjoy the time in the shop just as much the range. I have my own range, attached to my shop, and can shoot anytime. I have a model 12 heavy barrel lying in my shop that I took off a rifle that was shooting 1-2" groups at 100 yards, and we couldn't keep on paper at 600. I use is for a...

Intro to barreling or something similar

A prerequisite of a gunsmithing course would be a machine tool operations course. If you have not taken machine tool as a trade or a curriculum, then a course on rifle building, barreling, etc. would be a waste, and you would just be slowing down the other students. I found precision barrel...

    Rebarrel CZ 550 Varmint

No turn neck!? It would be a bummer to pull the bullet out in the middle of one of those comps.. PTG Reamer 308 Winchester MatchProduct #: 889590 Is what I have to build the rifle below. 155,168 and 175 all below max coal. No turn neck...but shoots really well. You can get a print from PTG. I...

    Rebarrel CZ 550 Varmint

Dan, You need some neck clearance. So, if your loaded rounds are .337 and your reamer is .337 your tolerance for neck runout and dia would be +.0000"!! Not good! Post what purpose of the rifle, cartridge, twist rate, bullet and brass you plan to use and people may be able to give you some...

My next build is a 300 WSM any tips.

Good info Nat. I assumed I would need to buy a wsm action, to get the magnum boltface in a short action, I was looking at the HS precision DM, and was wondering if they would feed through the .308 one? Ben
