    New Remington 40X

I've tried many times to convince my FFL that I'm sufficiently dispassionate to take the gun right away. No dice ;)

Thanks for the replies. When it arrives and goes thru the 10 day "cooling off" period, I'll take it to the range.

    New Remington 40X

Thanks, guys. Is it the bullet weight or the bearing surface that determines what the optimum twist rate is?

    New Remington 40X

Won a Remington 40X .308 target rifle yesterday at an online sale. I'm looking forward to getting this one out on the range. Are these used with any success in F class shooting?

Thanks for the tips and link, John

    F T/R starter rifle.

I tried a Near Mfg SPR mount and it didn't fit. The current SPR uses the Model 70 WSM scope base hole pattern and #8 screws. My rifle seems to use the model 70 SA hole patter and #6 screws. Main difference, in addition to the screws size is the spacing between the #2 and #3 holes, which is 3.5"...

    F T/R starter rifle.

Good information, msalm. I'd heard that the original FN SPR bases were Badger Ordnance. The Near mounts look pretty good, though.

    F T/R starter rifle.

I mounted the scope. Used medium height rings--should have used the low rings

    F T/R starter rifle.

Thanks for the link, Asa. I picked up the FN SPR from my FFL today, minutes after the 10 day "cooling off" period expired. It is every bit as nice as I remembered and looks very lightly used. I probably can't take any better pics than the full screen, high definition pics at the auction site...

    F T/R starter rifle.

I recently glommed an FN SPR rifle at an estate auction. I'm planning use it as a "starter rifle" for precision tactical. It arrived at my FFL last week and I started the 10 day "cooling off" period. I also ordered a scope and am planning on getting a Harris bipod. Anyone have any...

Scope bases for Winchester M70 Target model.

Thanks, Jay. I didn't even know that NF made scope bases.

Scope bases for Winchester M70 Target model.

I lucked out with the scope base. EGW told me that they had a Win Model 70 HH base with 20 MOA. They also told me that they receive about 1 call a year for one of those bases. At any rate, The base fit perfectly and I went ahead and mounted a B&L 6-24 scope with some rings that I had and took...

What is a "double dovetail base"?

    Bausch and Lomb 6-24x40AO scope.

Thanks, B. I forgot to mention that the rifle has a jewel trigger, which I've heard is supposed to be fairly good. I'm starting to get ansy about getting a scope on this baby and taking it shooting :)

Well, that is hard to beat as a recommendation.

Scope bases for Winchester M70 Target model.

Thanks, John I believe my action (1965) predates the short action M70. I also am convinced that Winchester made two different action lengths back then...a "standard" length and the .300 and .375 H&H "magnum" length. The rifle is currently chambered in .308. I do not know what it was originally...

    Bausch and Lomb 6-24x40AO scope.

I'm assembling an entry level F-class rifle from parts that I already have. I've got a Winchester M70 Target model with a 30" Hart barrel (.308) that I'm looking for a scope base for: I'm planning on using a B&L 6-24x40 AO scope that I have. I've heard that this scope is known for having...

Scope bases for Winchester M70 Target model.

Mike, I'll keep you in mind, but am hoping for a one-piece that has 20MOA built into it. I'm planning on using a B&L 6-24x40AO scope that apparently is noted for having limited elevation adjustment.

Scope bases for Winchester M70 Target model.

I think this predates the short action. I looked at the specs on EGW's website and learned that the distance between the middle holes in significantly longer than that of even the long action M70. I believe it is because of the clip guide... it required the holes to be set back. A gunsmith...
