6PPC Neck for Norma and Lapua Brass

You need to measure brass thickness at the neck with a ball mic. Calipers can be used but are not as accurate. Either Lapua or Norma is good. You will need to turn necks with an outside neck turner so your loaded rounds are about .002 less than .265. This would be a brass thickness of .010...

    Neck turning

By turning .0015 off the necks you have lost .003 grip on the bullet if you are using a fixed neck sizing die. Bushing neck dies let you select the exact grip desired. If you were seating the bullets long into the lands before neck turning, the lighter grip after turning can result in the bullet...

You'll just have to break out your 6ppc if you want to see sub .25 MOA accuracy

+1 to Alwina. I also have an older Sako in 6PPC that shoots well. Many groups in the .2's and .3's. I've won 4 small 100 events with 25 shot aggs in the .4's. I've found the slower loadings (2800 fps) seem to group better possibly due to the light weight barrel on the factory gun. AA 2015 and...

    Farley carry case

A few years ago I bought a heavy used Wichita front rest. It was delivered in an old Smith-Corona portable typewriter case. Very sturdy-very handy if you can find one.

    what dies Cooper 6mm BR?

With a .274 fired case neck I would want a brass neck thickness of .0145. This will give you a loaded round of .272. This gives you .002 to .003 clearance when chambered. The brass will wear out very quickly from firing and resizing the neck with more clearance from thinner necks. I would not...

    what dies Cooper 6mm BR?

What is neck diameter of fired round? Cooper's chamber necks are on the large side. The fired round neck will be about .001 smaller than the chamber neck. It may be the .264 bushing is pushing brass toward the shoulder causing an external donut. The fired round should have the same neck...

    Trimming the 6BR, 6PPC and 22BR cases

Power is not needed for case trimming since you are only trimming a few thousands off and only doing this infrequently. The turning handle on the Wilson is like sharpening a pencil, only a few turns needed. The Wilson trimmer can also be used to chamfer or ream the inside of the neck precisely...

    Trimming the 6BR, 6PPC and 22BR cases

Trimmers that use collets don't seem to hold every case the same due to slight variations in case head diameter. They do not hold each case perpendicular to the cutter face. The Lee guides against the case web not the head of the case resulting in uneven lengths. The Wilson holds the case body...

    Brass - Normal or Crazy

I just finished neck sizing 50 Lapua cases with my Wilson bushing die. The brass DOES increase in length .001 with a .002 "squeeze " on the neck. With a .001 squeeze it grows about .0005. I have not had to bump the shoulders of my brass in 3 different PPC rifles for 3 years. I should probably...

    Brass - Normal or Crazy

Your squeeze is not making the case lengthen. If you are using a FL size die with an expander ball, the expander ball(button) is stretching the case neck about .003 each time you size it. A bushing die without the expander does not lengthen the case.

    Annealing PPC brass

Lapua 220 Russian (the PPC Case) comes annealed. From the equipment lists of major group score events, 90%+ of top 50 shooters use Lapua brass in 6PPC and V133 powder. Most also responded they use light to moderate neck tension in neck turned brass. Sako, Norma and SSA PPC brass do not come...

    Hornady's New 17 Hornet

I owned and shot a 17 AH in a Cooper for a number of years. Pretty accurate in light winds (1/2 to 1 MOA) with careful reloads. Definitely NOT a coyote cartridge past 100 yds. Great for prairie dogs and woodchucks. No issues with brass or reloading but used Wilson hand dies only. Very limited in...

    Case Neck Separation

Also, if your cases are not exactly the same length, the stop on the neck turner will make the cut deeper into the shoulder on the shorter cases. Stand the neckless case next to a normal case (or measure) and see if the separation is exactly at the shoulder junction cut. Does your seater crimp...

    Case Neck Separation

Yes, that cut into the shoulder was probably too far. Are you crimping the bullet? If so, it may have been held so tightly that the case neck failed. I NT the same way on all my brass but I never crimp the bullets in 7 different bolt guns. No separations.

    Neck-Sizing once-Fired .220 russian brass

Steve and Wilbur, Redding says to NOT use the expander button when cases are neck turned. That is why your .257 bushing is not tight enough. The button opens the neck back up after sizing. With the .256 bushing you don't have quite so much spring back. With no neck turning the type S die acts...

FAILURE OF NORMA 6mm PPC BRASS

It seems like this thread wandered a long way off tract of the fractured brass question. Les, you said the splits occurred at the end of the last relay? Did your barrel loosen enough to increase the chamber headspace? My questions will go a long way to help solve the problem. If you have...

    De-burring primer pockets

I just used a deburring tool on 140 pieces of new Norma 222 Mag brass and 100 pieces of Lapua 220 Russian brass with no evidence of chips or burr material coming out. They do a fine job of drilling.
